The Mass Effect Movie has been announced recently! It will be made by Legendary pictures, the people behind 300, The Dark Knight and many other good films. BioWare heads will act as the executive producers. For more info go here social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/129/index/2717410

It'd better be decent.
Though coincidentally, Legendary Pictures are also working on the WarCraft movie.

Reserving judgment. the rights to spiderman were bought for years before a movie happened. Game movies tend to suck. I hope the don't ruin it.

I have very low expectations. I just don't see the Mass Effect story working as a movie.

I agree with Renegade.
Video game movies are almost always terrible. Plus - what's the point? Mass Effect is just 2 years old, and it's a great story. Why remake it in another medium? I worry that a good film will overshadow the games, and a bad film will damage the games.
Plus, you know Shepard will be a guy, and that means Jennifer Hale's role in the whole franchise will be diminished. Shepard as a woman will be an obscure off-shoot.
Plus - wil Shepard have a first name? If so, that kinda spoils the RPG elements of the games. If not, you have a protagonist with no first name...
Me and Knight have been discussing this. Thinking of drawing up a list of actors and directors we'd like to see involved. Any suggestions?

They'd better do it the way the WarCraft film is being made: Making it a story that takes place in the universe, but with a separate plot and a cast of characters other than the ones in the video games. Just let there be references to Shepard, and don't directly include him or her.
Anyway, I've been daydreaming about ideas for a Metroid movie most of the past year or so, so I might as well make up what I want to see for this.
Good Directors That I'd Want them to Direct the Movie (But Probably Won't): Ridley Scott, Michael Mann More Plausible Directors: Steven Spielburg (He's interested in the gaming industry), David Fincher (He likes trying out new stuff)
As for actors, I'd like to see Michael Chiklis, James Caan, Michael Ironside voicing a krogan, Steve Buscemi or Nathan Llane voicing a salarian, and a few others.

Seth Green himself should play Joker if the movie's about the main story

I like the idea of a Mass Effect movie in theory, but it's very hard to envision how they'd fit everything into a 2-3 hour film. The answer is they probably wouldn't. which worries me because two of the things you could cut relative ease from the story are Garrus and Wrex, two of my favourite characters. actor-wise, I've no idea, but I'd certainly like as many voice actors of the aliens to return to the roles. It also makes one think what they'd do with the aliens, maybe full cgi for the turian and krogan, and prosthetics for the asari and maybe the salarians, who knows?
Joe Estevez would be my choice for Shepard.

I have to agree with Cali on them making a separate story in the same universe with different characters. The Mass Effect universe has enough stuff in it that they could easily do that. This is what I honestly think they are going to do but to do the movie about Shepard would just diminish the games.
If it somehow is about Shepard then I'm going to be pissed.

I can live with a separate story line. I've even got a few ideas. Follow one character from life on earth, to the first contact war, and then end it on the citadel.
I doubt they'll do any thing good though. But we'll see.

I would LOVE a seerate storyline that compliments the games - like the novels. But I'm not holding out hope for this.
Also - Steve Buscemi as a Salarian is the best idea I've ever heard! I vote Cali should direct this movie.

My hope is tentative and small. "Canonizing" a Shepard, be it male or female, would indeed "ruin the RPG element" (and I'd write about my own Shep anyway, lol.)
I'd like to it be a non-Shepard story set in the same universe. (Maybe there could be vague glimpses of Shepard's silhouette or something, whether s/he is a legendary hero or a random grunt at that point in the timeline--that'd be a funny nod to the customizable character.) It would be great to see cameos or stories focused around other canon favourites, though--Seth Green as Joker is a must in my totally unbiased opinion.

Shepard's the only character in the game who can be different, so he/she is really the only character who shouldn't actually be in it, if you ask me. To avoid total cheesiness, the movie needs to move away from the game and it's characters/plot. That leaves so much space for expanding on the rest of the ME universe and actually telling a story that will work on screen. All my opinion of course, for what it's worth!

It sounds like a good opinion to me. But something tells me it'll just be a re-telling of the first game... I guess I am a pessimist.

I actually think maybe The First Contact War and the events leading up to it would be pretty snazzy. Discovering the ruins on Mars, the expansion, then a nice bit of juicy action at the end. If they get that right maybe they can focus on the time period of the games.
