Tilla - you know you'll watch this movie! xD
If you don't who will I discuss it with forever? Except Knight. Who will I discuss it with, in an Australian accent and a time-delay?

Yeah, they really should leave Shepard out of the concept if they want to make it work, IMO. But what would I know??? <_<

You know I'll get nightmares in the same vein as Spoony did with the Wing Commander movie, right? If I have my "post-childhood" dreams ruined because of this movie, I'm blaming on you Buch.

Thing is, Shepard's story is pretty darn good. I can genuinely say without being a fanboy that it is good enough to be made into a good movie. Having a fully VO'd main character gives enough personality to Shepard that Shepard can be made into a likable character on film. No matter what gender they make Shepard on screen it is going to piss someone off. Honestly I usually played a male Shepard. In terms of voice acting Jennifer Hale cleaned Mark meer's clock in Mass Effect 1 though not nearly as much as a lot of people say. I could hear inflection in Meer's voice that apparently no one could. He was good at renegade lines, but was a little too wooden on Paragon. In ME 2 I would have to say Meer had the better voice. Hale sounded to me like she had a cold or just woke up or maybe had a few to many Mai Tais or something. Not the most popular position in this board I am sure but I failed completely to complete a female Shep playthrough partly because of the voice acting and mainly because she was hunting poor Jacob from the very first conversation. Male Shep at least paced himself. Fem Shep was acting...well like a cougar in heat In the end the gender of Shepard in the movie makes no difference to me. It will be male, that is how Shepard has been presented in the marketing since the beginning. It will not be Jennifer Hale or Mark Meer, so no matter what our preferences Shepard is going to be different from our expectations. Now I am going to gaze into my crystal ball and outline how Shepard's character is going to develop in the movie ( if I am right I am going to have to restrain myself from hunting down the writers;caution cheesy writing prediction ahead). Shepard will be a male soldier space marine who saved Elysium from the Skyllian Blitz. He hates aliens at the beginning partly because of the Blitz and partly because of the first contact war. As the story progresses he comes to understand that aliens *sniff* are just like you and I and grows to respect the differences through his interaction with Garrus, Wrex, Liara and Tali. He grows out of his humano centric shell and saves the council at the end because of his new found respect for other aliens. I am less certain about this but I am guessing he will Bang Ashley

You're not the only Mark Meer fan jklinders, he will always be Shepard to me. I have no problems with Hale, I just prefer Meer.
As for the storyline I'm guessing you're mostly right, except I'm going to place my bet on Liara since she seems to be more of a character of interest. Nothing sell seats like alien sex, just look at Species.

It's good to finally see people who appreciate Meer's voice acting!

Well, to be honest when it comes to the VO for both Shepards, they are both good in their own right. Your mirage may vary but when it comes to be a hardass renegade, I prefer to be a male Shepard. Female version as a renegade are good but Meer's delivery when played as a renegade are much more fun imo.

Personally I prefer Hale, hands down. I thought Meer was substandard in ME1 (well by Bioware's standard, that is) and though he's massively improved in ME1, I still prefer Hale's personality, distinctive voice and military delivery. Her Shepard sounds like Jodie Foster, and I like that.

I also think Shepard's story is good enough to carry a movie - a very good movie, even. But I don't think there's any point in telling it again. They haven't even finished telling it the first time - now they want to reboot it already? I'm always weary of remakes: there are about three that I like.

Tillian, regarding the ME movie and Wing Commander... God, you're right. It's going to be exactly like that!!

Let's not start debating on who's the better VO, in short they are both good. It's just that, I'm used to playing as a female avatar in games whenever they give you an opportunity to play as a girl. Personally I like Hale's voice when playing as a Paragon, just certain moments are off... like dialogue with Jacob. I'm sorry but I cannot helped but cringed every time I've tried to talk to him. Haven't played that far as a male Shepard as a paragon in ME2 so I can't judge on it but I agree in ME2, Meer is improving his performance. --- If Shepard is going have a dialogue along the lines of "Ssssh... The geth might hear us." while going stealth mode on the SSV Normandy, then I'm done.

Honestly I was just addressing the concern you had about Shepard being pidgeonholed into being male for the movie. my comments on the voice acting was intended to be from my perspective only rather than to spark a debate. It really won't matter because we know that neither Meer nor Hale will be cast so we are all going to be Po'd at how Shepard is represented. Those disembodied voices ARE Shepard to us. ---- The Normandy is basically a space submarine. Not saying it is a good idea but that line could be spoken by someone for a cheap laugh. it would tick me off but on it's own would not be a game breaker.

i wonder if movie shep will be renegade or paragon. I kind of hope renegade, since I want to hear "Your grasp of the obvious is inspiring" on the big screen.

jklinders - Sorry about that, I understand about the pigeon holing part when it comes to Shepard's role in the movie. As for the movie... well, I gotta remind myself about the MST3kK mantra when it comes out.
As for the VO, Sorry if I get a little defensive about the debate, just that I had bad experience when ever someone on the web started up that debate... heads tend to fly. A little debate is nice once in a while but when it turns to flames wars, I'm kinda started to see the red mist in my eyes. I guess it boils down to personal preferance.
---
Anyways back to the movie talk. That cheesy line that I've mention before is actually a reference to the Wing Commander movie, where someone told to them to be quiet... while they are inside of a spaceship where the Kilwrathi was trying to find them. If they going to use that line, someone better lampshade that part on how space can't carry sound, in a snarky reply... preferably Joker.
Also it would be a refreshing change if we get to see the renegade version of Commander Shepard in the movies, since we had seen too many idealistic heroes on big screens and a paragon Shepard is a typical idealistic hero. In fact I'll pay to see a hardass renegade Shepard running around on the screen.

Tillian-One of the reasons I hang out here is because people have respect for one another here. I would sure as hell hate to be the one to despoil that. I never even knew there was a wing commander movie. Oh dear. --- Canon Shepard appears to be renegade, that's why I think he will start out that way in the movie. Besides, who doesn't want to hear "because he's a big stupid jellyfish" on screen?

Same here, this is why it's really hard for me to stop lurking in the BioWare forums and reveal myself, those guys tend to scare the crap of me if I make one wrong move,
Yep, that's a right... a Wing Commander movie. While it's a bad movie in it's own, when comes to the game... it has potential at the time be a good movie. Storyline is good and has nice casting list, Mark Hamill, That guy who play as Biff from Back to the future and many more I tend to forget. But yeah, this is one of those movies that make your spin in way of "how the hell did they fuck up with this one?"
So if canon Shepard is renegade and it will show in the movie, I'll even definitely pay to see that. Not only I want to see "because he's a big stupid jelly fish" line, there are others too.
"I had enough of your snide insinuations" BAM! "I had enough of your disingenuous assertions" BAM!
;D
