I thought I would open a new thread after this awful news. Cali I hope you don't mind me moving your post from Pet Hates.

All I can say has already been said. I'll be praying for everyone involved. Do we know a cause yet?

24- year old asshole thought he'd take out his frustrations on elementary students who can't fight back, along with a few of the teachers and his own mother. He should have just stayed home and shot himself instead.
The only thing that makes less sense is why he went from New Jersey to Connecticut to do this.

I agree with Gorvar on this one. Bad economy plus the usual holiday stress and a lack of coping ability could be a reason why this guy did what he did. That or he was already batshit insane and managed to hide it before this tragedy. This is just plain sickening.

Clint: They determined there was only one shooter (thankfully).

Okay, it turns out the gunman's mother worked at the school, and she's one of the dead. At least that part (him being from New Jersey and the school being in another state altogether) makes a tiny bit of sense.

So fuck-knuckles had family issues and couldn't cope.
Now I'm probably going to get scuffed for this one (since it's so early) but some things that I find curious. Why didn't the faculty try to evacuate the children and/or take the shooter out? I understand that hand-to-hand against a gun, especially a rifle, is long odds but it's the faculty's obligation to protect those children if not from a legal standpoint, then from a moral standpoint.
Hunkering down and hiding really isn't a real solution (Columbine proved that since the two shooters killed most of the victims who were hiding under their desks/tables). This is compounded that there's only one entrance/exit from almost all classrooms.
Sorry for the Monday Morning Quarterbacking here, but I'm trying to wrap my head around the faculty not doing something.

I can't imagine many teachers would be able to think clearly and physically attack someone who came out of nowhere and was gunning people down, Iron.
Also I have no idea what Monday Morning Quarterbacking is.

I think the faculty heard the gunshots, didn't know where they were coming from or how many gunmen there were, and decided the safest thing to do was to keep the kids inside. In that light, their actions make sense.

I feel I should quote part of my Facebook post from July regarding the Aurora shooting since the Connecticut shooting has several parallels to this one and other shootings.

Why would someone want to shoot innocent children?? This is the worst thing to happen in a long time - this is pure evil at it's core...
I just don't understand how this could happen...

I dont think wondering what the teachers were doing and putting any of the blame on them is right. They are only human and not trained to deal with people like this. They are kind and gentle people who love and cherish life, that is why most of them chose to be teacher. Everyone can arm chair quartback until the cows come home the bottom line is the person responcible is the shooters, the rest are all just victims, there is no one else to blame (without goinginto the whole failed systems and such)
In the coming days the hoorible puzzle will be put together and we will all know the why and the hows and the bottom line is the person to blame is the coward with the gun.
My heart goes out to the friends and family. I simply could not imagine what they are going through or what I woiuld be going through if that happened at my childs school or to my child. Some time you have to wonder what the hell is wrong with this world.
