I think teachers are more used to the thought of high school students doing this sort of thing too. I mean, the students in question were aged 5-10. I don't think anybody seriously thought that this kind of violence would happen in an elementary school.
I agree with spiritwolf on this one.

Nothing's wrong with the world. It's the people on it that can be the problem.

Of the teachers I've had, only one or two would have been capable of taking down a wet sock much less an armed nutcase. This does make the case for having better security at a schools though. Given the number of incidents of shootings and abduction attempts at schools on both sides of the border in North America it would be well advised to get a few guards and keep the fucking doors locked to outsiders.
Either one of these options would likely have stopped this creep.

The problem with the locked doors idea is the (small but real) risk of fire. After what happened recently to garment workers in Pakistan who couldn't flee their house of hell because of locked doors, I don't think schools are going to go that route.

Either way, as someone from my tumblr page puts it:
"We should let the family and friends of the victim to morn their losses in peace. It's up to us to find a solution, not making more unnecessary noise. "
So I hope they find a better solution to this, such as finding some sort of security for school faculty, so this tragedy won't happen again.

Most doors can be set with crash bars to be opened from the inside but locked from the outside. This is pretty standard in all publicly accessed buildings in North America. Contrast with Pakistani garment workers who were deliberately locked in as they were close to slave labour.

Oh look, it took less than a day for this to happen. It's kind of near and dear to us here on this board as well. While video games don't make me want to choke the living shit out of people, stupid people make me want to choke the living shit out of stupid people.

Saw that on my tumblr page a few days ago. Again, all of the that mindless pitchfork nonsense WON'T help stop to prevent the same scenario in the future. Not only it disrespect the victims of this event, but also they got mixed up with some other other guy who happened to share the same name as the murderer.
Here, there's a post from my tumblr page that sums up about this:
"You want to know why. This may sound cynical, but here’s why.
It’s because of the way the media reports it. Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single victim of Columbine? Disturbed people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. Why a grade school? Why children? Because he’ll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody.
CNN’s article says that if the body count “holds up”, this will rank as the second deadliest shooting behind Virginia Tech, as if statistics somehow make one shooting worse than another. Then they post a video interview of third-graders for all the details of what they saw and heard while the shootings were happening. Fox News has plastered the killer’s face on all their reports for hours. Any articles or news stories yet that focus on the victims and ignore the killer’s identity? None that I’ve seen yet. Because they don’t sell. So congratulations, sensationalist media, you’ve just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day care center or a maternity ward next.
You can help by forgetting you ever read this man’s name, and remembering the name of at least one victim. You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem. ” — Surprising message from Morgan Freeman. He blames the media for CT shooting.

I always thought that Freeman was a smart man. Now I want him to be really president instead of occasionally playing one in film.

@ The Mass Effect being blamed thing....I wouldnt be suprised if Fox news had their way with this. Besides cant people research this shit first before turning this into a witch hunt? Do they even know the premise? Saving the universe from a race of cyborg octopi = Killing innocent children? Seriously, those people all need to go fuck themselves. I know this always happens when sometihng bad happens, but seriously people need to stop blaming video games.
@ Morgan Freeman...the man is wise, seriously.

Westboro Baptist Church worship one thing and one thing only. money. Their founder is a lawyer and they exist only to piss as many people off as possible in the hope of getting someone to assault them so they can sue the shit out of them. They have a long history of this. The less their name is mentioned the better. Kind of like PETA

I'm with you, Clint Johnston. Those strange, crazy, unfortunate people are not Christians. I don't think they really know who the Jesus Christ figure is.

*facepalms* So ... much ... stupidity... Stupid Westboro... the level of hatred I feel for that false 'church' cannot be quantified... And stupid people who think that liking a video game makes a violent murderer... this is just as stupid as saying that the Columbine Shooters listened to heavy metal music and therefore Marilyn Manson is to blame for that... stupid stupid stupid. Stupid. I can't understand how a so-called 'church' can be so morally bankrupt as to say that the murder of children was "God's Work" - someone really needs to put them down. Somehow. They should not be allowed to say such things and cause such horrifying mental trauma to the victims' families... how in hell can the law say they are allowed to picket funerals? *taking a deep breath* Okay. I'm done ranting now. Really.

I don't really like a lot of what Morgan Freeman said there, but I thought the part about 'remember the names of the victims and not the killers' was very right-on. This Facebook post came up on my feed and I thought it was great.
