MGM is filing for bankruptcy, so now the "Hobbit" is scrambling for more money. I don't have an online article link; this was on the second page of one of my patients' newspapers on Friday.

The MGM lion roars no more. Instead, it sobs.

That's amazing. I can hardly beleive that MGM, of all things, is bankrupt.

Perhaps the big film producing companies need to look at their business model, and try and adapt to the realities of the present. With the internet making piracy and illegal file sharing easy and risk free (for those that know how), the old model of film making and distribution might just be on its last legs. The music industry (and ebook industry at the present) weathered this storm and changed - kicking and screaming, admittedly but they did change.
Still, seeing this news about MGM made me sad.

I hope Bill Bailey gets to play a dwarf in this movie, as a rumour goes. He'd be awesome.

Anyone think we're going to get The Lord of the Rings: Special Edition, so that the trilogy will sync up better with the new Hobbit movies? Already, they might have to change up that one scene in The Fellowship where Ian Holm's Bilbo finds the ring of power. =O

Nothing interesting here, no sir... EDIT: You may have to go onto YouTube and select 240p to watch this. It's totally worth it though, it has Richard Armitage!

Good news, everyone! Stephen Fry has been cast as The Master (and not in the way every Doctor Who fan dreams).

This production is starting to resemble a set of condos that was being built around here over the course of like 4 years. Get a bit of money, shoot a few scenes, then stop. Get a bit more money, shoot a few more scenes then stop.
I hope they don't forget what they are filming by the end of it.

Nice.
I thought Freeman would be great as Bilbo, and this trailer seems to confirm my suspicions.

I really do despise Martin Freeman (he who ruined Hitchhiker's and managed to be my absolute least favourite part of the collected psychological horrors that form Love Actually) so I'm very, very apprehensive about this movie. That said, he really does seem to resemble Ian Holm here, and has even changed his voice a bit, which is encouraging. And the dwarves (except Thorin for some reason) look brilliant.
I love The Hobbit and actually never cared for the LOTR books, so I suppose that explains my protectiveness here. This movie... apparently has the entire cast of The Lord of the Rings films in it, for no reason at all? Bad omen. And I see several lines and an implied style and characterisation in that trailer that simply never happened in the book.
I ought to trust Peter Jackson - not because I think he's a good director but because he made three near-perfect films out of Tolkein before. But....... why the hell is Gandalf being so nice, and why is Galadriel in it? Also Martin Freeman.

Buch, your question about Galadriel just got answered in this article. All I have to say is, "Peter Jackson, what the fuck are you doing?!"

I don't like the sound of that at all. Hopefully it's just speculation from the journalist, because I certainly didn't pick up on it.
Also "Elijah Wood's Frodo is seen only briefly [in the trailer]." Well yes, I should bloody well hope so, considering that he isn't in it.

She had a husband in the LOTR films, after all. King Elf, I think his name was. I'm really not happy to see Galadriel back, though. I can't be the only one who was scared to death of her in the other films. Even when she isn't trying to get the Ring, something about her just seems off. Creepy, somehow. He is, actually. I think the films have the Ian Holm Bilbo narrating the story to Frodo as a framing device or something.
