Oh he's definitely not the worst Doctor of all time, but Eccleson was better (I can't grade Matt Smith yet since I haven't seen enough episodes).
Good point about the writers though.
But still, I hear his voice and look at him and wonder what the hell they've got him signed up for.

He definitely should've been cast as the Riddler in the next Batman movie though.

Matt Smith is pretty good actually, far better than I expected him to be (and better than Tennant, IMO). Eccleston is still the best modern Doctor, followed by Tom Baker of course, who is the best Doctor of all time.

Yeah, I've heard mostly good things about Smith, but I am way behind on the episodes right now. And you're right about the other Doctors.

I think Freeman will be pretty good as Bilbo Baggins. His portrayal of Arthur Dent in Hitchhikers has me sold there. Not so sure about Armitage as a dwarven King. I'm not familiar with his work but looking at a photo of him I do not exactly have dwarven warleader screaming back at me. His acting resume is pretty good though. Several Shakespeare roles and more than a couple other appearances in medieval roles. We'll see.

Matt Smith is bloody useless.
And I can't begin to tell you how much I hate Martin Freeman, particularly with regards to the Hitchhikers' movie.
I know I'm complaining a lot here, but I just really, really hate both of them (and David Tennant).

Well I didn't like Arthur Dent in Hitchhiker's which is kind of the point because I don't remember him being a likable guy in the books. The portrayal was spot on in that sense. I haven't seen him in other work so I can't really judge the rest. If playing dumb is some kind of shtick that he plans on bring to Bilbo then it isn't going to work because Bilbo wasn't stupid. Naive lazy and on occasion craven but not stupid. And he dropped the craven part big time by the end so he can't run with that either.

The atrocity that was the film version of HHGTTG should be flayed, burned, then stomped on heavily followed by an extended session of spitting on the sad remains.

I watched the movie, then I read the book, then I watched the movie again. I didn't think it was a veritable tragedy of a movie. I thought it was pretty good, but not quite the book. Better wait for an American remake.

I doubt it will ever get remade in the States. It's just as well. It would be even worse.

The original TV series made in the 1980's captured the book perfectly, in my opinion. I believe it even used many of the same actors that voiced the radio play. Heh, I'm getting a hankering for a bit of Douglas Adams again. Such a pity the books are in storage. Hmm.

Actually I think just the opposite - the original Arthur Dent (in the radio, TV and novels) wasn't very likable at all. He comes across as cowardly and whiney. I think Freeman played him as a lovable 'nice guy' which is just such a waste of a character. And he acted it badly, too.

Having said that your post confused me, You mentioned that in the books that Dent was cowardly and whiney and I was thinking check and check against the performance by Freeman. Freeman added colossally stupid into the mix which expanded the character. I found nothing at all likable in Freeman's portrayal. Which again is the point. Well OK he was absolutely helpless which makes him vaguely endearing to some but doesn't exactly make me cheer him on as a protagonist. Viva la difference of opinion.
