We are all going to end up hating each other if we keep this up.
It' like we've gone from a bunch of mates to a family, and then a family who are really starting to get on each other's tits.

Leaving it at the door IS hard.
Unfortunately that is why the R&P section was opened in the first place. Not because of any real to desire to encourage the arguments but because they were happening anyway so they might as well be kept contained. my outlook is if we can keep it civil and not attack each other directly instead of simply the perspectives then all is fair. It's gonna happen anyway and I am sure as hell not the topic police.
There is perhaps a bit more diversity here than in the past. That is gonna lead to some colourful discussion from time to time. As long as we don't have to break heads to kleep order though I don't see that as a negative thing.

Karma to Iron for getting his biblical references right.
I for one really enjoy bringing these things up and talking about what we think. I know I've learned things from you guys that I would never get from my contemporaries. Sure, some of us are slower to take hints than others, and others among us stick their foot in their mouth. (Perfect as I am, I never do...) But we need that. We need the "are you insane?" comments. How otherwise can we re-examine where we stand and evaluate our position?
I get that for those who do not want to fight it's stressful. But again, all you have to do is not join the discussion. No one is offended if you don't want to talk about something.

Clint has a point. I butt heads with Buch and others pretty often, but if I don't have my viewpoints challenged, I won't be forced to re-evaluate them. This allows me to grow and I welcome such things. Sometimes I learn I'm wrong. Other times, I realize I need to think of new ways to present my usual arguments.
As long as we leave it at attacking positions rather than people, we should be able to keep things going.
As an aside, even Buch and I have SOME things in common. We both like similar actors and I can appreciate some of his musical tastes. It's usually when politics/personal ethics codes get involved that he and I start fighting.

It was Peter who thrice denied Jesus. I know. As Gorvar said above. I don't think ANY of us are re-evaluating our opinions or growing. I bloody hope iron and Clint are sometimes... eh. I do miss the days when politics weren't brought up often and we didn't all have this pathological need to compete against each other every five minutes. And i'm not sure that you can just 'not read it if you don't like it'. You're always aware that it's going on and it effects the community and the atmosphere everywhere.

Goddammit I know I shouldn't have resurrected this thread (GLOW, I'VE FAILED YOU) but I wanted to bring something to light in the racism discussion; "Racial Realism," "Eugenics," and "Social Darwinism" which is the ever growing discussion among a small myriad of right wing movements (A mixture of paleoconservatives, socially and economically conservative libertarians, and all out neo-Nazis). They use questionable scientific sources and research to support their claims as to why black people are generally "inferior" in IQ, and I can't tell whether it's kind of cute, or kind of creepy in how polite they try to sound in explaining this stuff.
I find the editing in this video hilarious, like with him implying that "The Bell Curve" (A highly controversial book that coorelates IQ with ethnicity and race, as well as socioeconomic status and crime) is some big treasure or maguffin. Notice how he tries to GET YOUR ATTENTION by occasionally TALKING VERY LOUDLY during significant points, which of course are the most inflammatory in his analysis.
A bit long, but it does touch on just about every trope you'll find in his side of the discussion.
One of the most prominent figures of the "racial intelligence" debate.
And in conclusion, the horrible "DISTORTED, WISHFUL-THINKING LIBERAL" BBC documentary about the issue. Since it's leftist it should be taken with entire barrel dumps of salt, rite? In all seriousness, it basically outlines the bullshit of the IQ system, and how flawed it is, most notably not paying any attention to social, musical, Bodily-kinesthetic, Spacial, and Linguistic intelligence.

I'm probably not gonna be able to budget the time to look at all of those, especially the 93 minute one but I've felt that IQ was a total crock for years. I've met some pretty spectacularly idiotic people with high IQ scores over the years. I've scored pretty high as well, but I can't be that smart working for low wages in a entry level cooking job. I've heard of the bell curve theory before. I had nearly forgotten what it was until tonight. I'm sketchy on the details but I remember at the time I first read about it that I found the science (if that word can even be applied in this case which is dubious at best) was nearly non existent.
Now I'll stand by with the fire extinguisher for the inevitable blow up.

I agree about IQ being outmoded. When I was working on my Bachelors we studied with the assumption that there were multiple types of intelligence. AKA Some people are good at one thing, some are good at others.
Django Unchained has a whole plotline about this same idea. Cristoph Waltz aces his role as disgusted sensible person.

Interesting and commendable, if he's doing what I think he's doing. www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/08/01/georgia-state-student-opposing-white-student-union-is-ignorant-and-closed-minded/That being: drawing attention to the double standard that exists in America (particularly in school) these days in that Black groups are applauded for being nothing more than black groups, whilst a white group of the same variety is a no-no. It's been 50 years since the civil rights movement and the Ku Klux Klan in not in the picture any more (well, not with any oomph), and there is still a deliberate segregation among students that is interpreted as pride and not discrimination. If it's ok for "minorities" (I hate that word) then why not for others. Of course, I'll have to eat my words if he does have some sort of racist agenda, but as of now, I'm impressed. A funny way of looking at it...
