Didn't a case on Affirmative action go to the supreme court from Michigan awhile back?

Not a clue
*checks google*
Michigan seemed to come in a few cases over the years with the university's policy being upheld in each of the cases I skimmed at one court level or another. The earliest I saw involved someone holding exception to an (odious) screening process that granted better preference to minorities than to a perfect SAT score. Problem was that screening process was not in effect at the time the plaintiff applied, the plaintiff was offered a spot on a waiting list but declined. Everyone who did go on the wait list that year was given a spot. See Gratz v Bollinger for more info.
The supreme Court thing in Michigan seems to be an appeal of the repeal of the affirmative action setup in Michigan that has bounced through the courts a few times.
The Texas thing seems to be a different matter altogether and because of the whole states right thing a case involving Michigan is unlikely to impact a university in Texas or vice versa anyway.
In other words it's complicated.

Hmmmmmmmm. That's another one of those issues where I don't have an answer. I've always been extremely suspicious about that flag though. No idea what to think about this memorial. History never becomes prejudice, I would say. They're two completely different things - not on the same spectrum. I suppose honouring certain events can become prejudice, and in my experience it's the same exact point that the first skinhead comes out to celebrate it, usually with his confederate or St George's flag waving high.

Oh sorry. I wondered about that phrasing but forgot to edit it.
I mean you can't ignore 4 years of bloody conflict because it makes some people get offended, but neither can you totally discount their legitimate feelings that the civil war was ultimately over racial issues.

Seems to me like no-one is ignoring the Civil War here, but this chap IS trying to mute out one side of it. Southern support is what's being ignored and discouraged by this. But is it right to remove a memorial because the generals in question are now thought of as the bad guys? Depends how bad, I guess...?
Do you know who is named on the memorial? I mean, is it just Robert E Lee etc. or are there names of proper soldiers on there too? That would make a difference to me.

Similar things are happening right in my backyard.
Edward Cornwallis was one one of the founding fathers of Halifax. There are streets and statuary of this guy in a few places and there used to be a school named after him as well. I say used to be because in addition to leading the initial founding of Halifax he also put bounties on native scalps after a group of them attacked a group of loggers. He wasn't terribly discriminate about the age or gender the scalps came from. While this was a pretty awful thing to do, I really don't think it's appropriate to try to scour this man from history as some special interest groups have been working on for a bit. I would be in support of some additional historical context be put in place but not destroying the history or work this man did.

Also difficult. But scouring a man from history and not naming a school after him are not the same. You can remember somebody without honouring him.

They also want to tear down statues and other memorials.
it also kinda goes on a lot of folks looking at what he did from a modern perspective outside of context. I think adding context and educating is far better than trying to forget that he existed.
Edit, OK seriously that was three posts in a row I got this proxy error.
I guess it's time I broke out my proboards support account.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stone_MountainLee, Stonewall Jackson, & Jefferson Davis. I've actually been to the top of this mountain. It's a funny story really. I thought the carving was at the top and so took the trail up. One loooonnng sloping hike later I realized that no, in fact the relief is only visible on the way down via the cable car. And it was a long hike. I was literally laying on the ground, worn out. All to see a statue I could have seen from the ground if I'd gone round the park the other way.

That's a different take on it than I was given when i read about Robinson as a kid. I also heard that even though he was playing for an opposing team in Montreal, the fans there openly booed their own team at the first signs of disrespect agains him based on colour. Now I need to revisit that.
