She is probably a loose Christian or a vague "something-out-there-ist". As Buch said, like the majority of the western world - people believe "something is out there", but are not more specific. She could well be Christian, though. I mean, I don't think Christianity per se changes, but how many people these days do keep to church rules while at the same time professing to be believers, hm? It's the same with Ashley.

Actually no, I think she is a proper Christian - not trying to imply her beliefs would be vague.
Williams seems to me like the kind of straight-talking, no-nonsense person who wouldn't be satisfied with a vague sense of something and would want her terms clearly defined and detailed. She's a dedicated and professional soldier, memorises poetry, seems to value her efficiency and frequently voices opinions when she gets riled. I see her as something very much akin to a Protestant or Catholic of the modern day, at least that's how I'm assuming she is meant to come across. I'd ay she knows what she thinks is right and will fight for it if needs be.
But again - this is just how I figure her based on the bits of her dialogue I remembered and enjoyed. And they really don't give us much to go on, so who knows. I can say for sure that I LOVE the character (although her 'make nice with the bug-eyed monsters' attitudes make me dislike her personally) and I'm extremely happy to hear she will be back for part three. She's one of my favourite squadmates in either game, and certainly she's the most 'human'. Appropriately.

But look at her reasoning - "How can you look out there and not believe in something?". That's just the same reason vague believers, or vague Christians use. Ashley is no-nonsense, but "God is out there" may be entirely sufficient to her for just that reason - any more theoretical dinstinctions would probably be seen as nonsense.
As said, she's one my favourite LIs as well... but I don't like what they did to her in ME, going by the trailers. The loose hair, the catsuit, the cleavage, that doesn't fit to her at all. As you said - she's supposed to be no-nonsense.

I guess we just interpret this differently - I don't think her 'something' implies 'something non-specific'. But hey.
And yeah, I have my doubts about her appearance in ME 3 as well - I think that's actually Joanna Dark they've cast as her? But I will reserve judgement. In the past I've generally been dead wrong about what I think will suck in Bioware - it usually turns out that what looked bad to me ends up great and vice versa.

She needs something to get her through difficult times and to remind her of her humanity. It kind of reminds me of Battlestar Galactica and the Cylons being the monotheistic culture in the story. Faith and having "Christian" morals is a confirmation of being concious of one's actions, of being above an animal. For Ashley, I think she's very self-aware of her potential for brutality and she tries to bring herself back to a civilized state, reminding herself that she's human through both poetry and faith. Didn't originally intend for this to get all deep and meaningful. Just got back from a church retreat so my mind's getting in that direction.

Coming in late to the discussion, but my favourite love interest is Liara. I like watchiing her character growth from ME1 to 2. Not sure I agree that she goes from bland to bitch - I see it more of a shy to confident thing. Also taking on the Shadow Broker just to get you back is pretty nice of her.
If Ash were an option for FemShep, then I'd probably enjoy that too, but screw playing M-Shep just for that. Mark Meers voice makes me want to punch myself in the face.

What annoys me most about Liara is how even though the way she was written changed majorly between games, the voice actress keeps playing her as the meek little archaeologist.
Even when she's making her big speech to the previous Shadow Broker, she sounds like she's nervous that she'll hurt his ears if she speaks up or something.

It's I think heavily implied that Liara is involved in some very shady business. That has nothing to do with confidence. She has a become a minor evil in her own right, so to say. Yeah, and then she gave you to Cerberus, and didn't tell any of the old squadmates even a single word about it. Really, I can understand the Virmire Survivor on Horizon way better than Liara in ME 2.

More than implied really. One her non-Lair of the Shadow Broker sidequests in Mass Effect 2 has you help her set up a contract killing (admittedly on one of the Shadow Broker's agents, but if Liara's supposedly good and is an information broker, I refuse to accept that all the SB's agents are as cartoonishly evil as he was in Lair of the Shadow Broker.). You get paragon points for it, too! That really freaked me out.

Maybe you were impolite to the almighty Liara?

Actually hacking the first set of three terminals get you renegade points. Every time. Always.
Maybe because Shep for some reason does it without asking why or what for. Just kinda breaks into a private network for Liara because...whatever.

Because ME2 needed more quests so you wouldn't realize how little plot there truly was (and how egregious quite a few of those plot holes were. A potential sociopath signing up with the very group that made their life a living hell in under 5 minutes of discussion being one of them- and then there was Jack). It made about as much sense as the dialog on Horizon with Kaidan/Ash if you ever wanted to go back over and analyze it (or feel like you were reliving high school-era teen angst).

Maybe you were impolite to the almighty Liara? It was a hold-over vengance for my rejecting the almight Liara's advances in the last game Seriously, I was pure Paragon up to that point. And then, because I choose Earth-born, I get the dreaded red bar.

I must say I kinda like the renegade answers in the Liara conversations. They just hit the mark so well - "You're obsessed!". Also, it's a nice comeback for her forcing all the mindmelds on you about which you can do nothing
