I got Modern Warfare 2 for Christmas, myself. I was just telling Buch that it's almost like a mini Mass Effect reunion in that game.
But yeah, I had heard Fox News rambling on about that level in the game, "No Russian." That was the first time I heard of that part of the game. It was really kind of a messed up level. You see people crawling to get away, leaving a trail of blood behind them. Made my jaw drop, and I'm glad that a game was able to do that.
I beat the entire campaign in like five or six hours, which seemed way too short, since I was enjoying it immensely. The voice acting was top notch (Barry Pepper gives another great performance after his excellent voice acting debut in [Prototype]) and the action is unbelievable at times. There's a level later on called "Second Sun" that nearly made me drop my controller and clap like a hummingbird. ><
And it never felt monotonous to me. Games like Halo get incredibly boring to me after awhile, because you don't feel a part of the story line, you just feel like you're in a shooting range. Modern Warfare 2 made me believe I was there, for however short of time that was. Thinking I'm gonna order the first game tonight.

I got MW2 for Christmas as well, I haven't really got past the second level yet but I did love running around with Hackett, Anderson and Alex Mercer in my squad, so to speak.
I also got the Saboteur, which I wasn't expecting to be as good as it was. The way it uses colour in the game is fantastic, oppressed areas appear in black and white, with the only coloured objects being blood and explosions. It looks like sin city. The game also has a pretty fun Stealth and parkour in it.

Modern Warfare 2 made me believe I was there, for however short of time that was. Thinking I'm gonna order the first game tonight. I totally agree. I actually just finished the campaign this evening. I've been so Mass Effect conditioned that I kept hitting the tech/biotic power key to take out those terrorists with a singularity. I did like the ME controls much better and, at times, it was really difficult to maintain situational awareness in MW2. The graphics were so realistic that I found I couldn't pull the trigger in that one mission. It was just a little too real. The story line was excellent and quite engrossing. That fact that your character could die and quite unexpectedly was an eye opener. Sometimes it took me forever to figure out how to get past a level though like the prison breakout. I did like the weapon modeling and found that small things like the optics were well done.

That fact that your character could die and quite unexpectedly was an eye opener. Someone had spoiled those parts of the game for me, but they were still just as crazy to watch. It made the ending all the more intense, since you really didn't know if either of the men were gonna bite the dust during that last fight. Really crazy. R.I.P. Ghost =(

I don't know if it counts as trippy, because I think it really tries to be... but I just played (and eventually beat) 'Earthworm Jim' for the first time since 1996! I used to absolutely love this game as a kid. So when I saw it cheap on Ebay I couldn't resist. I used to love the wackiness - on Level 1 you launch a cow into the air for no reason, you use your head/worm as a whip, one level has you bungie-jumping with a man made out of snot and trying to sever his green bungee cord, another has a guy with a monkey growing out of his head and a robotic chicken as the boss. My favourite wierd bit is when, during the space racing bonus stages, you hit a speed boost, and Jim yells (suddenly in a northern English accent) 'Whoooooooooa Nelly!' Earthworm Jim 2 was much wierder, and in a less forced way, but without the great gameplay. But the best thing about it is what happenned when you beat a stage. Seriously I used to adore this- Both games, in their quest for variety in their gameplay, sucked so damn hard in the protection missions... god DAMN I hate protection missions. I hate them. The first EWJ has this diabolical one, which took me most of today to finish properly. The worst thing is that at the end you have the option of taking the 'advanced' extra bit. Which is borderline impossible and does not tolerate any mistakes. But I would be damned if, after finally beating this level, I was just going to walk away and let it have the last laugh by intimidating me into doing the easy ending! I won. But really, I lost a lot of time and energy... -- But! back to the topic! I kept saying the EWJ games tried to hard to be wierd, and it's true. But every now and again they just really, really work, and become surrealist masterpiece. Back then this kind of comedy and wierdness was rare in games, and it really made you take a step back when you saw something like this.... And this is truly trippy- From the second game. And how cool is that? In the instructions you are told that Jim has 'disguised himself as a blind cave salamander named Sally' and then you're off. And this was the first time I had ever heard 'Moonlight Sonata' too - so I was amazed by two masterpieces at the same time. I would always take much too long on this level so that I could stare at it, feeling wierdly uncomfortable and yet impressed by that sensation, and listening to the music over and over. It ends with a quiz / gme show for a boss, in which all the answers are random and nonsensical. -- Do you guys have fond memories of these games (and their goddamned ridiculously hard protection levels)?

Right now I'm playing the classic 'Altered Beast' for Sega Mega Drive (Genesis?). My character is a ressurected, near-naked muscle-man who can transform into a werewolf, a tiger, an electric dragon and a bear who struts on two legs and turns thigns to stone. Right now I'm getting beaten up by unicorns in an effort to rescue Zeus' daughter from a floating head. This game is really hard too. I don't think she's getting rescued today. I remember that one from the sega master system. When you put it that way the game is truly WTF. Those old school games are hard*puts on grumpy old man hat*. kids these days have it easy their save points and health meters. In the old days when you died in game, you died for real and dieing was easy too. Ahem, none of the old school games are immediately coming to mind as trippy, but Psychonauts is a pretty wild ride. In that game yuo are kid with psychic powers who is in a summer camp for psychics and you are trying to stop someone from harvesting the brains of the kids for some crazy plan. The art design fits the concept and the major action happens in other characters dreams.

I never did beat 'Altered Beast' and rescue that princess! I hope she's okay!
It's true, on the whole games were way harder back then. These new games with their save states and their emphasis on story have made us soft.

Definitely, though I seriously thought he was going to take out both Soap and Price at the same time. I was freaking out, lol.
Sigh, but it won't bring Ghost or Roach back. =(

American McGee's Alice REZ Amplitude and Frequency (the precursors to Guitar Hero) I can't think of any others for some reason.
Well, Max Payne, the blood trail level was pretty trippy.

I always wanted to play American McGee's Alice too. It looked great.
I'm very curious to see the new Tim Burton movie too.

Its pretty difficult. I just started using cheats half way through it, but only because I'm pretty sure this on level is glitched. (Its a house of mirrors. I can't remember the specifics, only that I couldn't figure out how to get to the next part of the level. And when I pushed the ~ key the console button, and since that worked I typed noclip, which also worked. I can only walk around in circles for so long before I start to get irritated.)
Also there's Psychonauts. I had to stop playing it at the last level though because I was having a rage stroke with the double jump not working right. You know, the burning fence cylinder, and the T-bone. Yeah... f-k that crap, they can eat my ass. ..sorry, just thinking about that level still raises my blood pressure.
