My first go at poetry in about a decade. It spawned a 10 minute discussion on what love and hate may or may not be in class today, which kind of surprised me (even more surprising: admitting that the guy you wrote about is the reason why you still want to become a pyromaniac on Valentine's Day is rather shocking to some people!). It's probably appropriate that it's about unrequited love and a lot of liquor. Memory In A Shot Glass Edit 9/9/10: New title, mild case of editing. (Yep, this is a great reason why I usually try to avoid writing poetry!)

Very interesting bits, Buch and Chantress! Buch: It's a funny poem, but it has some rather sad twists to it. I like that blending, and I think you did it well. (Especially the ending: "And everything would be smooth / And soft / Like me") Chantress: "but most times I'd be shoved into darkness / like your galaxy's distant star." I have used a very similar metaphor in my ME story! Also, I like how you wrap the whole poem up, repeating and turning the first two lines.

I've decided to do NaNoWriMo this year. It's probably a horrible idea what with schoolwork, but my roommate is doing it also and she's sure to provide moral support and/or make fun of me if I fail. Liberated from any pressure of having to be good, my novel is about an elderly Victorian ghost-hunter time-traveling back to find out what killed the dinosaurs.

NaNoWriMo! I've epically failed writing more than 5k words for the last two years' NaNoWriMos.
Granted, that was all fanfiction then. And now I've got an original setting and story skeleton waiting right there and nagging me at the back of my head. And there's relatively enough free time after work... hmm.

I'll take all the fellow sufferers I can get.
I thought about doing it with fanfic, but...if you're gonna do it, might as well do it all the way, right? I've done lengthy fanfic before--I know I can. Original stuff not so much.

I signed up for NaNoWriMo. Considering what I'm dealing with on the home front, this is probably a truly bad idea, but if it gets my mind off of stuff for a while, it may not be so bad.

Woohoo! We should make a support thread. What's yours about?
Doing it in the middle of school is probably a bad idea as well, but the thing might as well be difficult.

Originally, it was going to be a historical fantasy about the Sarmatians. I still have quite a few books that were *not* cheap to come by on the subject (ever want to know how much a text on Indo-European languages costs? Roughly $85. Good luck finding that in a local library where I live), and many pages of notes. Unfortunately, an illegitimate cousin of a noblewoman showed up around 2 a.m., was piss drunk and tried to set fire to a few of the king's soldiers, and the whole idea was thus changed completely. (Read: minor character ended up becoming a major character, and trying to make her a minor character again has completely failed.) Think of her as a lot like Amanda Jane Shepard from "Bad Night in Flux", but on horseback and with swords (considering that they both popped into my head in much the same way, that's a pretty fair comparison). I haven't worked on the story at all since she introduced herself, but I figure that her story is prime NaNoWriMo material precisely because of her awkward origins.
And those research notes? Maybe they'll come in handy for book 2... or 3.

*Puts literal brakes on this thread.*
All right, hang on. What the hell is a NaNoWriMo?

National Novel Writing Month. The challenge is to write one 50,000 word novel in one month, usually November. ^_^ It's got a website somewhere.

Ta da! www.nanowrimo.orgSo can we take the brakes back off of the thread, Buch? And thanks to lieden for the quick review on my poem. (I meant to do it sooner, but the talk about NaNoWriMo made me forget my manners. Sorry about that.)

Oooh, okay. Thank you both.
*Brakes removed*
*But do not rest easy, people who know literary things which I do not. For at any time, in any place, perhaps while you SLEEP in your comfy BEDS, at ANY TIME, those brakes may be reapplied.*
