Well I was relaxing and enjoying my weekend when some asshole got the idea to beat his apparent girlfriend on the sidewalk outside my apartment. Literally punched her hard enough to send her to her knees before kicking her in the head. I called the cops and paramedics and gave a statement, but now I'm seriously hoping he doesn't know who I am or try to get payback on me.
For the record, I know I did the right thing in calling the cops and giving them a statement, but I'm going to be overly cautious against reprisal coming from this fuck.

I wouldn't be too worried. He's a coward who beats up women. And you are a big enough person with training to no doubt give him pause.

Good for you Iron. A lot of people just close the curtains in situations like that. You got real guts.
I wouldn't worry about reprisals either. As Clint said - they're more likely to have another go at the girl than you. There is always the chance of getting a gang together, but it's usually low, especially if the police have took his name.

All the same, I'm going to be on my guard for a while. Dude looks to have a history of that kind of thing and it would be just like him to blindside me if he knows I'm the one who called it in. But I couldn't stand by and do nothing so I'll deal with things as they come.

Maybe have some mates over for a couple evenings?
But honestly, it's probably over and you did good.

Good for you, Iron, for calling help for her... I hope he stays the hell away from her (and you)... gods, that poor girl... I hope she feels better; being hit that hard can't have been good for her head... both physically and emotionally... You definitely did the right thing... That poor girl...

Fuck.
Hearing about this shit pisses me off. I'm glad you called it in. It is a good idea to be on your guard for a bit, no telling what kind of crap a coward who would beat a woman would try to pull if he thought the guy who "ratted on him" was unaware of him.
Thank you for being a positive element that called the authorities instead of turning away. Pink Floyd had that one right.
I hope to have the guts to not turn away if I see that shit.

Update. Got a call from the Sheriff's Department because the sergeant who took my statement needed to know what state I have a driver's license in for her report and she said that everything's pretty much handled. Turns out the attacker was recently diagnosed with a mental issue and his meds got screwed up. According to everyone they interviewed, including the girlfriend he attacked, this was extremely out of character for him and he'd never done such a thing before.
They're holding him for medical observation and the DA hasn't decided on filing charges yet, but odds of retribution against me is very low. Still going to be attentive, though, just in case, but it looks like everything's over with.

Well, I hope you're right that odds of retribution are low...
Also I hope that if he really is suffering mental issues there can be a way to guarantee this doesn't happen again... out of character or not, he still beat a girl. And she probably has injuries caused by the kick to the head that might be hard to heal.
Poor girl.
Still, attentiveness is good, just in case... and I hope things really are over with.

Good work, Iron. You got a helluva quad, mang. As Buch said, there are a creepily robust amount of people who would turn a blind eye to that sort of thing.

My hat is off for you. That's some good work. Also alertness doesn't hurt a bit. I hope this is over with.

And now I'm dealing with Monday morning quarterbacking from some guys I know. They want to know why I didn't intervene and stop it.
Main reason: it was over too quickly for me to get out there and my only option to intervene from where I was standing would be for me to take a shot with my pistol, through two layers of glass, at a bad angle, with the girlfriend between me and the target, and do so in under two seconds. Not only would the gun be overkill, but there's no way I could guarantee hitting my intended target and I flat refuse to take a shot I'm not sure of.
Others ask me why I didn't track the guy down and beat him. My answer was that I'd be guilty of felonious assault and battery, lose my clearance, my job, and get a prison sentence. Not to mention I didn't know if the guy was armed and from how vicious he was to his girlfriend I'd be willing to bet he would be armed and I'm not about to go start unneeded trouble.
On top of all that, add in what I learned hours after the fact about the guy's mental condition and what triggered the attack.
My actions were the best possible given how it went down and I'm not second-guessing what I did, but that kind of shit from those who weren't there is annoying.

People who expected you to beat him. I'd spend less time with those people.

I hope you don't mind my saying this...but it sounds like these guys you know are idiots.
Monday morning quarterbacking is silly to begin with, but actually suggesting that you stalk and beat the guy? Fucking stupid for all the reasons you listed and probably more that neither of us will remember. I hope you flat out told them as much too.

Wow people are dumbasses.
What you did was already the best thing to do: call the police and tell what you saw.
Going after the guy after the fact would have been (as you said) a crime in itself, and would have probably put you in more danger - aside from all the job-related ramifications of doing so.
I still say you did the right thing.
