Ahh Clint, your taste in music is nearly as appalling as ours is awesome. It's ok, my refined palate is not for everyone... LOL [warning label: some responses on internet forums may not be entirely serious and therefore not meant as insult to any of the affected parties]

I went looking for a dress today for the first time, my mother and I went to a nice new Bridal shop that opened up in a business park near here - and my god, I had no idea they'd have so many dresses just hanging in the shop! They apparently sell them right off the floor, with any necessary alterations as needed, but I could have theoretically walked out with a new wedding dress today, if I'd found the right one! And if I had the butt-load of money it costs for a new dress - some of their dresses by one particular designer (Vera Wang - no surprise there regarding high expense) started at around $600.00 and could go as high as $1600.00! I cannot afford that - but I will have to see what happens when I go back - because, and here's the really exciting part... * drum roll* I found what might be The Dress!! It's so very pretty - has the perfect skirt made out of the perfect material - not too fluffy, not too lacy, not too blinged-out - though, for all my talk about not wanting a really pimped-out wedding dress, the one I liked today had a rather sparkly beaded / blinged-out bodice. And also, and nearly the most important part - no mile-long train at the back for me to clumsily trip over! I want it so bad - and if the one I found on their website after getting home is the same one, then it's less than $300.00 - which I might actually be able to afford! (Not a Vera Wang dress - but then, all the Vera Wang ones were a little too pimped-out for my style taste). I'd post a pic here, but... tradition states that the groom is not allowed to see the dress before the wedding, and Linders would see it if I posted here, so... no pic here. I really hope this is the dress though, because it is truly stunning. The excitement is building... On another note, the Bridal shop included a bag of catalogs and pamphlets and stuff, and the pamphlet they included advertising a wedding photographer indicated that the cost for the photographer's services for the wedding day would cost $2300.00! I can't afford that... and I have to wonder - if I was a good photographer, I could make a KILLING by hiring myself out as a wedding photographer! $2300.00 for one day, really? With all the other costs associated with weddings, no wonder people go broke paying for these things!

Great news, Lily. However... Check your PMs, my dear Yoda - I mean, Iron! I can't post photos here in the thread where Linders can see...

Went back to the Bridal shop today for an official Dress Fitting; when you make an appointment you get a full hour with a shop lady / stylist who brings out dresses based on body type, style preference, budgetary concerns, etc. and they help you find the Perfect Fit. I was lucky; it took two hours in the modelling area, but since the store was not busy the stylist was happily bringing me dresses and helping me for the whole two hours!
The dress I had been admiring on Tuesday was not able to be altered (so I could not add straps to the strapless beauty), and was only able to be bought right off the rack - could not be special-ordered in. So that turned out to not be an option. Which is perfectly okay, because...
I got to try on five different dresses, and they all made me look pretty, and I never thought I could look that good!
I ended up buying the second dress I'd tried on... and it was a bit funny, because my mother went with me to the fitting session, and when I tried the first dress, we both ooh'd and ahh'd over how pretty it was, but then when the stylist was helping me with the second dress in the closed fitting booth, I said rather loudly "Oh, I think I like this one better!" and my mother laughed from outside the booth and said "Already? Do you even have it on yet?" and the stylist replied "It's not even zipped up yet, so if she's this excited before it's all the way on, this might be The Dress!"
And as it turned out, it was The Dress! I tried on three more after that one, and while they were all lovely dresses, and #5 actually tied with #2 as being my two top picks, it ended up being #2 - the most beautiful of the five I tried!
It seems more real, now, that this is happening and I am getting married to an amazing fantastic man; it seems more real now that I have the dress and it's bought and paid for and now all I need to do for the dress is wait for the special order to arrive so I can have the final fitting and be ready to become Mrs. JKLinders!
Linders, you're awesome, and as hard as it is to keep secrets from you, I am going to have to try my hardest to not show you the dress before the big day!
***
Apologies to all for my rather blatant descent into girly paroxysms of girly-ness... I can't help it. This is what happens when I am faced with pretty shiny white wedding-related things!

We can only hope the cake shopping takes as long. My mother will bake the cake, and my aunt (who is a very talented cake decorator) will be decorating it... so no cake shopping to be done, just need to buy the supplies for Mum and her sister to make the magic...

Are you kidding? Lily's mother is a fantastic baker and materials are way cheaper than paying a baker to do the same thing. We're doing the food ourselves as well which is way cheaper than catering at $30+ a head.

My mother's cakes are fan-freakin-tastic!
There's a reason I miss being young enough to live at home and dependent on my parents for everything - my birthday cakes were always amazing!
I will say I lucked out awesomely when I moved in with Linders and ended up benefiting from his amazing cooking skills, but he's a cook, not a baker, and he doesn't make cakes... so I've been getting into baking, but I am nowhere near as good as my mother is...

I always heard people can only be good at one thing, cooking or baking. You cant be a expert in both. So it's cool to have that spread out between couples.

Oddly enough, it's almost that way with my parents - though my mother is a great cook, as well, her baking skills are incredible - and my father is a good baker, but his cooking skills are like Linders - fantastic! Though my father makes incredible Peanut Butter Cookies - my mother's cakes and pies and tea biscuits and cookies are amazing. Hmm. Mum's Tea Biscuits. Pardon me, I need to make a quick phone call... *phone rings* "Hey, Mum, can ya make me some tea biscuits?" *Mum hangs up on me* Dammit... lol

Aww Now I'm jealous... My Mother is an excellent organizer, but not really a great chef or baker. And she consistently gets weird health kicks. One year I asked for Lasagna for my birthday. Simple Lasagna. No frills, pasta, meat sauce and cheese. Nope. Mom added in a layer of eggplant for health benefits...
*high fives linders instead*
