Actually the whole Italian Renaissance is pretty fucked up when it comes to politics. Still I don't think it's quite as bad as Ancient Rome, least you still might have a better chance to die from another cause, instead of assassinations.
The way politics run in Rome... well I would take a dodge and retire to the countryside instead.

The countryside isn't any better in the late stages of the Roman Empire Era, there's a good risk of the town being sacked violently, due to the defensive response are a bit slower and less effective. Come to think of it.
I'll still pick the Renaissance Era over the Antiquity Era.

I would to, then again you had the French invading...and the Germans tried to take over at one point. Probably move to Brugges, that place was bawling back in the day with jousts and shit.

Part of me wants to visit Normandy and Scandanavia during the Viking and Migration ages.... until I remember how shitty the medical knowledge was back then.

Neither side was wearing a white hat in the Crusades.

No side ever is. But 'our' hats were way darker. When you send 200 years invading countries with the intention of killing them over and over until they accept your religion, you kind of have to own the 'we started it' argument.

True, but the Crusades were in response to violent, aggressive expansion that had been going on for decades (not to mention it was a way to get Europeans to do something other than kill one another).

True enough, but I think those are minor points compared to "Let's go make all those dark-skins love our pacifist Martyr prrophet by.... by killing th........ DARK SKIN!" That's a two-hundred year deal right there.

I don't think killing because you think God told you to is a much of a defence... and for the sake of relics, even less so.

I'm saying that's what they thought, that's what their priests or imams told them, and very few checked in with God to see what He thought.
