Here's an inversion post of this thread.
I'm feeling brave enough to try to play FFXIII again, once I'm done with AC2 and Brotherhood; and got some time to spare. Admittedly, the story writing in general is a tad awful, but I'm willing to try and finish it, mainly to see what really went wrong and teach myself on how not to commit those mistakes, if I ever get a chance to write an epic RPG one day.
I blame Sppony One and my former mentor for making me giving this game another look.

SERAHHH!!!
But to be fair, despite the bad reviews I keep hearing, the plot and the design really do look interesting to me.

Oh god, I almost died when the SERAAAAH counter pops up. Just like old times. Although, the way they plotted the whole thing out was interesting... in a train wreck sort of a way, it's probably more than enough to give this game a bit of a spin. Say what you will about the Grav Con device, but I feel it could fit in the ME fanon writing, which I'll put that device into good use, somewhere in my comics. Or if I have time, I should write a game doc based on that device, just for the lols and see how Spoony reacts if that game goes into production. But really, it does have some interesting concepts, but pity they kinda ruined with their poor execution. The whole ludicrous story elements doesn't help.

Exactly. Things like the gravity device and the aerosol power-ups and the sci-fi peasant rebellion train rescue job sound brilliant to me. *Potentially* brilliant.

Aerosol power armour is a little to far-fetch for my taste and also it gives characters such as Miranda an excuse to walk in fan service suit.
But the gravity thing is brilliant device, I so could see some people using that a lot... like the Assassins in a distance future.
No bale of hay in a futuristic metropolitan area? No problem, just activate the damn thing and jump.
Character designs are a bit meh though. But would building does seemed intriguing, which is more of a pity, because I would love to play an decent fusion of fantasy science fiction RPG setting for a bit of change. FFXIII could have been that sort of game, but SE missed the mark... a lot.

You know your FF game is bad when I think your coolest characters are Black Dynamite with a chocobo in his afro and a Morrigan rip-off. Also Snow gives Zell a run for his money in the dumbass department.
-sigh-
....why didnt FF9 get a sequel? I mean...that was the best one in the whole goddamn lot next to 7.

Gorvar, no! Don't give SE ideas, they'll ruin FF9 by making a sub-par sequel.
Also even worse that it's not the character factor that makes it so bad, it's the storytelling in FF XIII. You know it's bad when you have to read up on the codex and the FF wiki a lot to know what on earth is going on. God, even a documentary drama is more clearer and self-contain than this.

Actually I did use the storyline for FFXIII for my Fellowship of the blue lady. As in how NOT to suck.
Agreed on the codex thing, it;s there for if you want to read more about certain aspects of the lore, it shouldnt be the main thing to do as in knowing where the fuck you are in the great scheme of things. Also the mini chocobo being a plot element? That is Terry Pratchet stuff right there....except he does it better.

I think we can all agreed that SE is smoking something during their writing session. No sober man could think up in such a way.

I still shudder when I remember Sonic 2006.
I hear the most bat shit insane stoytelling before, but it can work (eg: The Anti-Christ was switch at birth and a few years later, he saved the world by being... a boy. Yes, you're looking at a bible crack-fic that was commercially published and it was brilliant.)
So yeah, I can't exactly bash anyone who uses the most insane idea, such as using FFXIII as some sort of inspiration on the story. Hell, honestly the original basis for my comic before ME3 threw it out of the window, was probably worse compare to now. (I hope).
As someone would say, even someone who had the most killer idea, would turn out wrong if they mess it up.

Is it me this time? Every time a dozen of 'professional' reviewers gives a game an unquestionable high score, I tend to be put off a lot often from that said game.
Only a few handful of games I willing to put in some actual research first before I'll try it out.

Only a few handful of games I willing to put in some actual research first before I'll try it out. I call it "inverse Alpha Protocol syndrome". "Reviewers" will give 9-10 scores to games that are just a basic regurgitation of a previously released game (CoD, EA's sports games, etc) while giving a decently written game a 5 or lower because they can't hit a squirrel in the left nut at 50 meters with a pistol from the beginning of the game or they don't understand the concept of "charging several SMG-armed bad guys blindly is a fast way to get in the running for a Darwin Award". Not that I'm bitter or anything.
