Kickstarter could be the saving grace of the games industry, and we could see some really unique games come out of this. It's a damn shame that a game as ambitious as Wasteland 2 couldn't get made in today's market, but it's a clear sign that publishers are somewhat out of touch when something like that gets $3 million in funding sight unseen.
Really, inXile and Obisdian need to live up to their word, though. If they mess up or delay the game too much or deliver a product that kinda sucks, I can't imagine fan-funding will take off as quickly.
It's a good sign, though, when Brian Fargo and Chris Avellone keep such close tabs on player feedback and actually discuss the game, whereas BioWare in the same timeframe will claim "artistic integrity" over and over when they're not snubbing their fanbase entirely, and provide a fix only when it starts costing them money.

Yeah, if it weren't for a few funding schemes that help indie game developers, I would flip the table and call it day as a upcoming Game Designer myself. I almost feel tempted to change careers because there's not much in the industry I would be vaguely interested, if the market is mostly dominant by AAA companies in the long run. Artistic Intergrity is dead in my eyes, regardless what BioWare has claimed. First the stupid Day One DLC scheme, the ending and now the endless flood of same old games we've seen in the late.
Anyway, I really hope sucess will come to inXile and Obsidian. We really need that push for the industry, otherwise we'll never going to catch up with the other mediums like Literature, movies, art; in terms of "Artistic Vision".
Also people like BioWare are one of the reasons why most accademic scholars from other sectors don't take game studies scholars very seriously...

Not for long. They'll pull a big advertising thing for Dragonage 3 and be back in Geek good graces, though not mine.

Still not enough to get them back into NASDAQ radar, though. Thankfully enough.

I'm a little surprised that their investors have not called for blood. But this is otherwise more or less as I predicted. SwtOR looks like it might have a faint shot of breaking even. If so bully for them. That was literally the best outcome that you can expect from a 35o mil dev cost on a game.
Bioware will probably be relegated to making Madden and SIMs game in about 3 years. *shudders*

And I for one am looking forward to a story driven Madden game where the protagonist either becomes a example for the football community and a role model for children or become a jerk and celibrate their status by having drugs and loads of women.

I had no idea about NFL much, but those last replies made me chuckle and loose off the game developer gloom off a bit from me.

Don't have 50 bucks, BioWare stole it from me, along with a bag of cookies.
We should rob them back.

If I have to write a Ocean's Eleven story as well, count me out on that...probably turn it into a Reservoir Dogs thing anyway.

Less on Ocean Elevens and more Reservoir Dog, considering I've still regretted for paying like 120 aus dollars on that game.
But meh... too busy on my comic. I gotta finish that prologue section, so I can derail the canon timeline for good.
