He also had people around him that could tell him no when he made stupid decisions. There was no one around that could tell him that for the three recent films.
I remember in one of Plincket's reviews he had one of the special features off one of the DVDs playing. It was the chief editor of A New Hope complaining about how Lucas made terrible and boring edits all of the time, and how he would have to go in afterwards and fix all of them.

Dude,' Empire strikes back' is WAY better then 'A New Hope'. The good guys lose Hoth AND Solo AND Luke get his hand lopped off, but they continue on because there is always a sparkle of hope. You're both wrong. Return of the Jedi is the best Star Wars film.
