Historical accuracy, a coherent plot and not to glorify a bunch of fascists? Tut tut. I'm pretty sure that fascism was not on the table during that war. Hell by the standards of the day Sparta was actually kind of progressive. Sure like all other civilizations they kept slaves but citizens mostly had an equal say and women had it better there than damn near anywhere for hundreds of years. But yeah, regards to actual accuracy the movie was crap. It read like a period propaganda piece which arguably was what Miller was going for. BTW Frank Miller licks balls. Fascist or no, They killed BABIES! And we're pretty much supposed to shrug that off and cheer those guys on as they slaughter the deformed brown people in their short-shorts. I'll just leave this here.

As did many other cultures where food and resource was hard to come by. Social services and health care were not exactly prevelant and crippled or deformed children were considered a liability.
This was 2400 years ago. Applying today's ethics to them from the comfort of our centrally heated homes within a short drive to a state of the art hospital the services of which in many of our homes is paid for by the state is pretty...odd. So I don't. I try to imagine what it would be like to live on subsistence farming, feeding myself and my family and the prospect of having a household member that cannot contribute to that.
This is not callous. This is the thinking of the time based on cold hard realities which hopefully none of us will ever experience.
I'm not much interested in starting a flame war so I'll just leave it at that.

I think it's a bit of a moot point. I don't think Miller or Snyder gave a damn about the actual history, but just saw the Spartans as exciting, macho underdogs (and maybe used them to represent the American right? Miller?)

Correct. Miller himself said no one should take him literally when it comes to history. And Snyder was a fan who was being faithful to the comic.
I am more divided on the whole propaganda for the American right. Sin City was basically a deconstruction of the idealized corporate run world where all the authorities were covering up the corruption and evil of the rich guy. Frankly I just think Miller is simply a sick old fuck. Nothing or or less complicated than that.

I haven't seen that movie in forever. That was the Aliens franchise at it's peak. It could only go down from there.

You know... while we're arguing... I like Alien 3. I think it's a fitting, solid ending to the series and more true to the first movie and the Ripley character than 'Aliens'.
And I love the ending - I might even nominate that for this thread.

And another thing - I always hated Newt! I loathe cute kids who inexplicably survive action movies.
I was secretly kind of happy to hear about it. I just wish the doctor had also told her, "And also, the kids from Jurassic Park. And Short Round."

Well, women and kids always survive Jurassic Park movies. I liked Newt only because it seeemd to help riply sort of get over the loss of her own daughter.

This one being my incorrect use of the word fascist or nazi button. Overuse of these words has diluted their meaning to the point where they are meaningless. The rest was just me playing devils advocate on a touchy subject. If we go around vilifying every culture and individual throughout history for practices which were at their time acceptable but not now we would have no statuary or warm fuzzy feelings about the origin of any of our societies. This also happens to be one of my buttons. So that's 2 he hit.
