Thread Re-named. Originally; "I'm going to be a mum!"
Ok, so thats not strictly true. More like surrogate mum. And not to a baby, either - its a duck. I'm incubating it in my bra.
Momma duck accidently knocked it and one other out of the nest, and it would disturb her too much to put them back, so me and my sister are adopting the eggs.
We're not sure how long the eggs need incubating for, could be up to about two, maybe three weeks (maybe more, maybe less), and there is still a chance that they were out of the nest too long and in fact won't hatch at all. But, fingers crossed.
I'll keep you updated with any changes. Feel free to suggest names for him/her!

I was taking the headline seriously at first! This is lovely, Chief Can't think of any particularly good name suggestions right now, but do let us know how this goes!

Sorry no names but congrats on becoming a surrogate mum for the little ducking. Hope it hatches into the new world

Update!
Ok, we were able to determine that my egg was actually a fairly fresh one and thus was not developed. We decided not to carry on incubating it because, to be fair, lugging that thing around in my bra is 1) uncomfortable and 2)makes me a really odd shape and 3)more difficult than you might initially suspect.
However, the egg my sister was incubating IS developing, so we're going to keep that one and see if we can hatch it. This way we can share the workload, and have a greater chance of success.
Don't feel bad for the one we're no longer incubating - its no more a duck than eggs at the shops are chickens. Might make a good omelette, though.
I'll keep you posted.

I do feel a little bit sad about the first egg, but this means the other one will have a better chance.
What will you do with the little fella/lady after it's hatched?
I'm suggesting Scrooge as a name, by the way.

Well, I imagine the others that Momma duck is still nesting will hatch at around the same time, so we'll just integrate it in with the others. There's so many down there I doubt Momma duck will notice one more.

What if she does notice the extra duckling? Not to be the voice of pessimism or anything, but there's still a chance.

Well, it IS still her egg, so it should have her scent and that, so she shouldn't mind. If we're lucky, we'll be able to slip it back into the nest AS it hatches, so it bonds with momma duck and she with it anyway.
If not, then we'll have to keep baby duck in the house and hand rear it, then integrate it back with the others when its old enough.

That doesn't sound so bad. Bringing up a duck would be kinda fun!

But messy - VERY messy. Birds poo a lot, and you can't house train them (they're too stupid).

I have bad memories of a horse chasing me around. Now I'm always wary of them.

This brings back memories of hatching eggs in first grade. Good times good times.
