Ever since seeing Buch's avatars with Kaiden and an asari wearing a pair of spectacles, I've always wondered:
Do glasses even have a place in the Mass Effect universe? I would assume with futuristic medical technology, there is no need for them.
But what if somebody wants a pair just to be stylish? Because they either can't afford the corrective treatment or any other reason.
One of the reasons I'm asking this is because there's a character in my fic that I might put glasses on. I want to make it plausible enough to where the character has a reason to wear them, but I dunno yet.

Since we don't see anybody with even only aesthetical glasses, I would assume they're way out of style or something. Probably like if somebody were to wear 19th century suits these days. But I guess there are always people doing such things... however, they might stand out quite a bit.

The Mass Effect Wiki has this to say on Ashley:
"According to Bioware's official data, Ashley's Military Vocational Code is B4 and her Blood Type is B-Positive. She had received genetic enhancements including in-utero vision correction (maternal predisposition for nearsightedness) and Class-B Alliance Infantry Upgrade Package."
Knowing Mass Effect, I'd probably say it's pretty cheap to get your genes spliced in such a way. I remember Thane and Jack's alternate outfits in Mass Effect 2 have those horrible sunglasses, too.

Clearly mad science will become a proper practice in the coming 200 years.

Unless the character is from a family that is so poor that even routine gene mod was not done (back alley birth or something) it seems doubtful that glasses as we understand them are used. One would think there would still be sunglasses though. Not everyone goes around with space helmets and full armour. I know we don't see them but I can't imagine bright sunlight hurting less in 200 years due to a gene mod.
There's always the eyepatch visor but I'm reasonably certain that's not the effect you are looking for.

I don't think there are any characters in-game who wear glasses at all, so I would assume the tech to correct bad eyesight (in-utero or otherwise) is very available.

Personally, I wonder why there are any in-utero pregnancies at all still, but that's another point [/pet peeve]

Personally, I wonder why there are any in-utero pregnancies at all still, but that's another point [/pet peeve] Probably cheaper and more reliable than what tech could do. Things like disease immunities and nutrition and oxygen get passed down for free unlike a test tube where everything has to be carefully monitored. Also the mechanics of waste removal which is handled by the mother in-utero would be...complicated to say the least outside the womb in the earliest stages.

Cheaper, yes - and a real burden to the woman. And not really reliable, either. And it's 2183, plus a technological boost worth centuries. I personally expect the first artificial uteri or uterine replicators or whatever you want to call them around the middle of next century. Add a further one, and they will be as widespread, well, as giving birth in hospitals these days I think.
It's just one of those things were sci-fi authors invent all kinda cool starship technology in their stories, but not the sort of technological changes that will change every day life.

Dude... You're taking this way too seriously. It's a game. A made up world. It's existence relies upon events that have not occurred.

They're only games/books/movies if you take nothing away from them. If there's one thing I love about Mass Effect, it's that the universe is so open to interpretation, and that it rides close enough to some version of reality that it makes people wonder about whether or not this or that could actually happen. It kinda begs to be fact-checked, and that in turn can support some great conversations about the future itself.
tl;dr - I've had way too many conversations about the asari gender, the Sith Code, and the blasphemies of intelligent orcs in Faerun to argue objectively. xD
