I'd like to think that most of the people on this forum get a kick out of writing from time-to-time. So, I must know, what are some books that have had an impact on your writing or life in general? Myself, I don't think I'd be writing at all if it hadn't been for R.A. Salvatore's Icewind Dale Trilogy and Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. That was the first time I sat down and said, "Hey, I want to do that." xD Pic Unrelated:

As you probably have noticed I don't write a lot. But there are times when I just feel like writing and I'll spend many hours in the next few days to writing. Then there are times that I just don't feel like writing at all which is why I'm only half way done the story I'm on now. But I do like to read!
The books that have had an impact on me the most is The Wheel of Time series, which I have mentioned a few times before. When I first heard about The Wheel of Time I looked it up and saw there were 11 books with the shortest ones being about 700 pages and the longest being almost 1000. At first I was like yaaaaa I don't think I want to commit that much time it would take to read all of those books plus a few months after hearing about them I saw the author Robert Jordan passed away and the book series was incomplete.
But one day I was at the dollar store and saw the book A New Spring which is a prequel to The Wheel of Time. It tempted me I looked at it and after resisting for a few minutes I got it. It was only between 300-400 pages so I was done it in no time. Then I went out bought the first few book and now I have all 11 books and all I have left to read is the 11th one then I'll wait for the 12th one to come out.
The story is so complex and I love all the characters, hell I care about the characters in the book like they were real people. I'm so immersed in the books that I often find my self thinking about what happened in the books what will happen, the characters and plots. It just feels like a living breathing world. It's become a regular thing for me to read The Wheel of Time and I often find it hard to take a break in the series and read something else. Sorry to go on like this but The Wheel of Time is something very special to me.
As for writing as I've been reading the this series I have often thought about how cool it would be if I wrote and book and have it sold in book stores. But dreaming is as far as it goes so far.
Also DEATH BY SNOO SNOO!

Lol, DEATH BY SNOO SNOO!!!
Hard to answer... I suppose my first inspiration in my writing and creatively in general is dated back when I was 14 years old when I've decided to pick up Tamora Pierce's Alanna, first book of the Song of the Lionness quartet, for a quick Fantasy Genre fix. The realistic PoV of a woman trying to reach knighthood and strong persona for the female protagonist have inspired my future works which leads up today. Even now despite those books are designed for teenagers, I've still enjoyed it.
Then later I'm inspiried by the Choronicles of Pern series by the settings itself. Maybe I like dragons too much. >.> But yeah it also inspired me to create a hiarchy of the Dragons for my Empires in Fragments world.
Also Twilight inspired me to... well have the female protagonist getting killed by her abusive BF in my current original work Portait of her Reflection, as a more... realistic and honest PoV of relationships and death. Also as my protest about the SMeyer's message about love to young ones. It's misleading and I have to be honest about that really. That obsession with that kind of love will get you killed for your stupidity.

I think I already mentioned that I was really inspired by To Kill a Mockingbird, which they had us read at school.
Honestly the book that got me into both reading and writing was a Red Dwarf book - Last Human by Doug Naylor. I was always a Red Dwarf nut, but this one novel really kicks it up a notch, expanding the characters and the universe and giving a fantastic dramatic layer to it. That book made me start reading, and there's this one scene at the end that is just beautiful. One of the characters spells out something in Morse code. I'm planning on getting a tattoo of the message on my arm soon to commemorate it.
I'm also really encouraged by the Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy series, and the sense of humour in Rob Grant's Incompetence.
-After lengthy femputations, femputer sentences them to death.... by snoo-snoo! -Yeah! -(Kiff weeping) -What are you, gay?

I just started reading Ender's Game AND I just realised that in my accent, 'Orson Card' sounds like 'Horse and cart'. heh heh

My friend's in love with the Wheel of Time series as well. He's been trying to push Eye of the World on me for years. The only thing keeping me from reading it is the ridiculously small print the paperback editions have, and my poor vision doesn't help things. So I should probably suck it up and buy the hardcover edition eventually, the one with the big font. xD
That was terrible that Robert Jordan passed away writing the last book of that crazy-long series. I hear good things about Brandon Sanderson, though.
Now, Twilight...eeehhhh. I wouldn't say I hated it, but I wouldn't say it was the best read ever. It went quick, didn't overstay its welcome (unlike its presence in pop culture). But see, my opinion is biased, since I like vampire stories. I bought the second book after I finished the first one, but it's been sitting on my shelf for six months, and I haven't read but one chapter.
One of every seven books sold in the United States this year was a S. Meyer book...no, I didn't think it was good enough to warrant this.

I'm sorry kngihtfall, but if you noticed my sacasim... you can tell I've absolutely hate it.
I've tried reading it before my mind exploded. It requires to have lots and lots of brain bleech. SMeyer is the only authour where I felt I need to shoved her head recklessly at Princess Doe's Gravestone to show the meaning of a bleak realistic life, as her story were dangerous and too unconnected with reality.
And yes, I'm sounded in a shitty mood atm because I have to start over upload my pictures again for my "Let's Play" session. Now I have to wait till tomorow morning to let it finish.
God... I'm... fucking...pissed.

I'm pretty impressionable, which may be why I'm always inspired by whatever I've just read, or what movie I've seen recently. My writing will usually resemble the last book I read. - Never mind, Till! It'll soon be Christmas.

Well Knight from what I hear that a Eye of the World graphic novel is being made. After a delay they are finishing up a New Spring Graphic Novel, and I WANT IT! I just find it amazing by how much the main characters change and grow throughout the books. Yes the print is small but it doesn't bother me The only hard cover one that I have is New Spring. I've heard good things about Brandon Sanderson too. Like I said before that the fact that he is splitting the supposed last book into 3 books just shows that he wants to make the rest of the series the best that it can be and he's not cutting corners. As for Twilight well uh thats defiantly not the book that I'm reading right now before I read the next Wheel of Time book. Nope defiantly not....

My writing will usually resemble the last book I read. - Never mind, Till! It'll soon be Christmas. That'll always happen. That's part of the reason why I write so much fanfiction: to blow off all that plagiarized steam. xD But, I find that if an author really finds an interesting way to communicate an emotion or an event or something like that, I'll adapt it into my style over time. Not completely, but in a subtle way. We have no choice but to build upon what we've learned from others, and make strides to stay inspired, but not fueled by such things. Here's something Brent Weeks said to me before he went dark and became a NYTs best-selling author (if I already sent this to you, apologies): The 'who am I plagiarizing today' question is valid, honestly. I find myself to be very sensitive to other authors, even still. So once you get into writing a novel, you may find you can't read very much fiction. Many authors substitute reading some great history to mine for facts...whether is George R. R. Martin and the War of the Roses or whatever. Then when you rip off stuff, you just look like a good researcher.

I ought to read one of these Twilight books, to see what all the hatred is about.

Buch.... just don't. Stay away from them, for the love of badgers. That made me almost cried at the spoiled, bratty protagonist who gets everything she wanted (MARY SUE ALERT!) whole normal "humans" had to work our butts off to get what we wanted. Oh, did you know the author is racist in a ME sort of a way where she constantly keep saying in the interviews that humanity sucks? true story.

One other thing, I've just remembered what have been inspiried in the basis for "Empires in Fragments" is the "His Dark Materials" by Philp Pullman. From the Celestrial beuracy, the streampunk world right down the having an animal enity. It's a beautiful book for me as a kid. I love, I think that's what inspired me from that point till now...
speaking of heavenly wars, I have a dream some iron fist monster took over the celestrial heavens, cause a massive problems with the afterlife, causing a mass dead spirit going on a limbo, many of them refusing to go to the heavens because of the political bullshit.
Damn... I need to write this idea down into something...

Your dreams are WAY better than mine. I think I will get around to Twilight out of sheer curiosity.

Strangely enough I'm getting these sort of dreams since the day I've started my defer at Uni. Seems like the creative gods wanted me to be more create and less procrastination.
On the topic of this thread, I do have to admit my sense of humour when up stories do come from The Hitchhiker to the Galaxy

Seriously Buch, don't get near to the Twilight, I'm warning you for the last time... anyways if you're really going to ask for trouble then you might as well try to ruin S.Meyer's profits a bit by downloading these pdf files instead. Normally I don't support piracy most of the time... but this is exceptional circumstances.
(Well, wait for a bit if I were you, the link to these files is broken for now. Just don't waste your pounds on this piece of shit.)

You are really strongly opposed to me reading this book! Maybe I can get it at the library...
