I thought I'd start a new thread for when the game is released, since the years-old thread for anticipation is getting a bit long and has been a bit sidetracked with The Last Court.
Reviews are coming in today! Little roundup from me because I'm so excited about the game--
They seem to range from 8 - 9.5 out of 10. The general consensus seems to be that it's better than '2' but not quite as good as 'Origins', that it's very large (sometimes to a fault) and that the change in pace from 2 is severe, in good and bad ways. There is a lot of focus on lists of minor criticisms, with the assumption being that everything else is high quality:
-
Many reviews suggest that the main quest is too dull, too simplistic - you are the amnesiac chosen one going up against the big bad and closing his Oblivion Gates. Obviously this is Bioware playing it safe - anchoring (haha) the story in something they know they can do since their recent attempts at politics, anticlimax and complexity went so very badly. It looks like Bioware have made a very conscious effort to make the plot solid and safe, and to put the more interesting, deeper stuff into the details and the 10 explorable 'zones'.
-
Apparently the combat gets a bit repetitive after those 60+ hours, but the change in the healing mechanics seems to be welcome. Also there are a lot of bugs all round and the PS4 version crashes constantly but Bioware promise they have a patch ready for release day. Crafting, horses and strategy seem to be less world-altering and much less necessary than the promotional materials have been suggesting.
-
The cast of characters are very widely praised across the board. And people seem to unanimously enjoy the Inquisition itself - being at the head of a faction and choosing whether to behead people. Opinion seems to be divided on whether or not your decisions make major differences - some reviewers say it's very satisfying to see how Thedas is left in the wake of the Inquisition, and others say the final battle is pretty much the same regardless of what livery the faceless soldiers are wearing. No-one has really said whether or not the Horribly Unsatisfying Incomprehensible Ending we all fear is present or not.
-
One reviewer said to keep watching after the credits. I can only assume this means that Iron Man will show up and recruit the Inquisitor to the Avengers.
-------------
So that's about what I expected, honestly, having seen so many videos by now. What matters more is probably the opinions of the vaunted, humble players! What I can gather from them via internet comments is 1) The female romance options aren't sexually attractive enough for their surprisingly discerning tastes, 2) the choice of female romance options for a male player (two) is not enough and this is part of an agenda to overthrow heterosexual male players, all of whom evidently are repulsed by the laughable idea of roleplaying in an RPG, 3) they certainly hope that no gays attempt to force themselves on the player like Fenris and Anders absolutely didn't but Angry Joe misreported, and 4) Fuck EA, The Witcher 3 is better. Sage and significant points all round there from the voice of the people.
