From I've gathered, when Mike took the reigns of the human role in MST3K, the riffing become more consistently funnier, helming classics such as Space Mutiny, The Final Sacrifice, Red Zone Cuba, and Pumaman. His jokes were considerably more tied to pop culture and cult cinema, which was great. It seems however, that when Joel was around the intermission sessions (Which are my least favorite part of the show) were far more well done. Some of the show's inventions during the Joel/Dr. Forrester era were quite hilarious and innovative. The inventions during the Mike years had their moments, but they were sort of placed on the back bin, and usually nowhere near as hysterical and awesome as Joel's "Drum Exosuit" and Forrester and Frank's "Drinking Jacket". It should also noted that overall quality of MST3K's movie riffing was lower than it was during the Mike years, but there were simply too many classics in the Joel years, such as Manos: The Hands of Fate, Pod People, Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, and Mitchell, to disregard it altogether. Mike is generally loved more among MSTies, and I can truly see the appeal behind that. But I'm going to go on a limb and say that I like Joel better. His tired and trippy voice made nearly everything he said funny as hell. He also had a some charm Mike just couldn't pull of for me, dunno why.

What can I say? I really do love them both, but I'm probably be edging slightly closer to being a Mike man myself, for the reasons you pointed out above.
Yes, Mike was funnier (he wrote most of the songs, if I remember correctly), but there's something about Joel that makes him nigh impossible not to like.

Caligula, you summed it up perfectly. I'm only a casual fan (it was almost never on TV here so I only really got into it quite recently) but I think you said it all there.
Mike had better scripts, and Joel had a more likable personality, to me at least. Joel was cool and odd (different, you might say), Joike was a little jock-like.
But Mike put the work in, was writing it from the beginning, and you have to like the man for that.
I vote Joel, but by a hair's breadth. They were both wonderful.

I absolutely hated Mike when he first took over and actually stopped watching the show for a while. I knew he wasn't going to be exactly like Joel when he got the job, but at the time he just did not seem funny to me at all, just annoying. I can now watch episodes with either host and find them both likable, but I gave the vote to Joel because (like Cali said) he had more charm.

I have new evidence (well evidence) in Joel's favour.

Joel and Mike were awesome, but I'm a bigger fan of Crow and Tom.
One line I'll always remember from this show is Crow riffing The Crawling Eye. "She can eat corn-on-the-cop through a picket fence..." I was useless until the next host segment, laughing too hard to breathe. xD

Good point about Crowe and Servo.
Also - I've been watching some Mike episodes lately. Starting to think I prefer him now.
