I was just wondering what you all thought of this one. I was talking to Knight about it earlier and just got done actually watching. I actually loved it. I thought the whole 'cheating on his girlfriend' thing at the start went on for too long and almost ruined it for me before it began. And one or two of the cool, hip bits and in-jokes were annoyingly cool an hip. But in general, I was really impressed, and I laughed a lot. More than anything it was original. The jokes that didn't make me groan all caught me off-guard, maybe even got more laughs than they deserved for that. But it was a smart, realistic romantic comedy, with some very neat little jokes aimed at my exact demographic. Also - Edgar Wright seems to have finally learned his lesson about not repeating jokes over and over again to tie the plot together. Now that I've talked and talked, I really would like to hear your opinions if you saw it, because I'm not sure about it at all.

I'll just say that I thought the movie was funny. There was definitely humor there and it was worth the rental. My problems with it are from a "moral" standpoint, I guess, since I can't think of the proper word.
I didn't like how there were video game references for no apparent reason. It was a movie about musicians, and somehow that translated into a video game movie. They made one or two direct references to Zelda and Pac Man in the actual script, as if that was enough to establish them as gamers, and then proceeded to make other, completely random references.
In the process, they sort of glorified this hipster culture and made the main lesson of the movie out to be: if you can cheat on your girlfriend for a hotter one, totally do it.
I thought it was okay, but I still don't get it. If someone can explain why Sonic the Hedgehog soundbites belong in a movie about musicians, that'd be awesome.
...This is the stuff I think about! xD

Now, I do agree about the cheating on his girlfriend. If I hadn't found everything else in the movie so charming (and if they hadn't... kinda... sorted it out in the last scene), this would have ruined it for me. To be fair, he didn't cheat on Knives because she wasn't hot enough but because he didn't like her in general (and because Michael Cera's purpose in life is to suddenly meet The Girl of His Dreams and pursue her.) And it's true that these handsome, oversexed, stylish bass-player kids weren't exactly the sort of people you'd expect to play videogames. But- I must point out that there were a lot of game references, not just those two specific ones! The whole concept of the film (battling seven evil exes) was a videogame joke. (In fact I think the people behind the Wii game 'No More Heroes' could probably sue... seriously, think about it: the sound effects, the coins dropping, the sword...) I think the nostalgic-game theme was used to suggest the characters' age-group and general culture. And even if it didn't fit, it was quirky and nostalgic and nicely done. I know it's no surprise that we disagree on a movie, Knight But I liked this one a lot!

I happened to watch that on New Year, and I thought it was quite funny. Admittedly, a major fun factor was due to a friend's idea to make subtitles in contemporary Greek youth slang for the first third of the movie or so (it proved to be too time-consuming a task to do the rest), so half of the time we were laughing at his translation. I'm not going to comment on the story because I don't think it matters too much in the first place. But I liked the cheery video-game feel (and structure). Quite fresh.

Well, I don't think it was because he didn't like Knives, since he only started to get bored with her after he noticed Ramona at that party.
And I did notice all the references and the boss fight structure, and how the club at the end was called "Chaos Theater" in honor of Earthbound. But that didn't do it for me. It would have made the movie for me if the characters actually talked about videogames and made the structure and the references more relevant. As it stands, I can point out the direct, verbal videogame references on one hand: Pac Man, Final Fantasy II, Zelda, and...Ninja, Ninja Revolution...which isn't a real game!
It was like the movie was filmed and written by someone who only has a passing knowledge of video games and then edited by someone else who really does. I didn't like that disconnect. Boo to that disconnect.
Wasn't there a movie that we both hated, Buch?

Knight, you are wrong about Knives! The movie made it clear that he wasn't really interested in her - she was too young and too nice for him and everyone pointed out how he wasn't serious about the relationship. He seems to also prefer the 'evil' type.
I know that doesn't justify him cheating on her, but it's not a matter of hotness (Knives was clearly prettier anyway). I actually have plenty of criticisms of the movie (like I thought the ending was too happy and that the happiness wasn't justified) but not the videogame one. I loved that style and throught it was done well and lovingly.
Anyway the point is that you are ALWAYS WRONG about movies, Knight!!

xD I'm sure there are sone movies we agree on, and I can;t remember which film it was but I do remember that! lol

Personally, I hated it.
But - I was practically paralysed-drunk at the time, and I don't remember the film much. I just remember hating it a lot at the time.

I haven't seen it tbh. My friend was raving good it was at the time and he wanted to show to me when we got the chance... then that chance never happened because of uni.

This one seems to divide people. Yeah it does. Looking both at Spoony's review and comparing to Cinema Snob's review... that says it all about the film.
