I sort of dreamed about this a few nights ago and decided to share it with everybody. Probably not going to have anything like this implemented by BioWare, but I was thinking of Mass Effect 3 having tutorial missions that are Shepard's flashbacks/dreams/nightmares, functioning similar to the origin stories in Dragon Age.
The flashbacks would be based on all of the possible (pre) military service histories. Another cool thing for following through with them would be to give Shepard stat bonus' in the game depending on which one he chose (though this may be overkill).
Soul Survivor - This is the one I dreamed about. Basically starts out suspenseful and creepy, where Shepard, a junior officer, heads to Akuze with his marine platoon. Corporal Tomes will show up under Shepard's command and be a temporary squad mate until dissapearing in the chaos. Shepard leads his men across the area and is ambushed by Thresher Maws, and his platoon, as well as the other officers are killed in the ensuing battle. The player controls Shepard over a course of sped up days and nights where he forages for supplies, water, and sets up a distress beacon in a cave, and ultimately has to fight and kill a Thresher Maw with improvised explosives. Shepard awakes after a cutscene where he is extracted by a rescue ship.
Possible bonuses: Increased health, more damage dealt to bosses/powerful enemies
War Hero - Pure Starship Troopers and Star Wars type action. Lieutenant Shepard is shipped to Elysium and dropped into a warzone during the Skyllian Blitz. The player holds the line from waves and waves of Pirate attackers in a row of trenches, and Shepard takes the fight to their staging area, inspiring the men under his command. Shepard and his battered platoon take position in the usual batarian drop zone so that the combat engineers can set up an anti aircraft gun to ward off dropships and frigates. The player controls Shepard while he defends the engineering team, and ultimately has to fight a dropship. The flashback ends with Shepard and his platoon sitting in the war torn area by the functional AA gun, as he toasts to his men while having cups of coffee and smokes.
Possible bonuses: Increased storm speed/stamina, more damage dealt to normal enemies.
Ruthless - The mission starts out on a dark, rainy foreboding day on Torfan, much like the planetside scene in Aliens. Shepard and his cohorts drop in under cover of harsh weather and near darkness. They move in on a Batarian outpost, cutting communication lines and sapping sentries. Some of his men are detected and the base goes on full alert, ensuing in a chaotic battle. Shepard rallies the men he can reach, and are pinned down by grouped enemy gunmen. Shepard is forced to send one of his squads to draw fire while he and others attack from the rear. The first squad is annihilated, and Shepard's team and the batarians brutally engage in battle with eachother. The player then leads his team to the enemy barracks, smoking them out. The batarians step out, their weapons dropped and offering their unconditional surrender, but Shepard finds an excuse to kill all of them. The dream ends shortly after Shepard stands over a young, wounded batarian, and raises his gun to end his life.
Possible bonuses: Increased squad health and damage, increased shields
I thought the pre-military history flashbacks could be done later if they were implemented at all. Was thinking that there would be a time in ME3 where there's doubt that Shepard will succeed, he retires to his quarters to sleep or nap and has a dream about an instance in his far past (whether it be Earthborn, Colonist, or Spacer), and the end of the dream ultimately being the instance he was inspired to join the Systems Alliance Navy. Whaddya guys think?
