Remember before the launch of Mass Effect 2, BioWare said they were going to be recording statistics from our playthroughs and using them for further reference on future games? Well it looks like they've just released them: I'm kinda worried they'll take too much away from this data, what with the soldier class being the most popular and a sixth of cutscenes being skipped. I really don't want Mass Effect 3 to be more action-oriented and lighter on the cutscenes than Mass Effect 2 was.

Maybe they'll meet each other.
Why the hell is soldier so popular? It is in my opinion the most boring of all classes. Are there really that many kiddie shooter fans in the ME fan base?

Isn't soldier the default class? Perhaps some people don't do any character customisation at all, just want to start shootin' playing right away. :} In ME1 I played as Vanguard and Adept, carried on my Adept to ME2 for two playthroughs, and recently tried playing a Vanguard for a little while (Charge + Shotgun makes for a bold playing style!). Overall, I think any class not involving enough biotics is a little boring.

I'm a vanguard/Infiltrator player myself. Not a big fan of the "caster" classes in any RPG. I am growing to like the in your face style of the vanguard and I have always appreciated the tactics and sniping of the infiltrator.
Infiltrator has always been the class that most closely represents what a spec ops marine would be to me so I prefer them for roleplay purposes.

I always go for the most versatile caster classes available in RPG's. :D I don't have the reflexes required for decent FPS-style gaming, so I like a more tactical way of playing.
That said, I couldn't finish ME2 in Hardcore difficulty. I'd always get stuck and run over by armoured husks in Horizon. >:(

Hmm, this makes me slightly worried, too. It really seemed like, from the beginning, BioWare was trying to draw in the Gears of War crowd. With ME2, they tried even harder, but judging by these stats, it wasn't enough! They're thinking one of two things right now:
1) Wow, the action-orientated sections of the game were really popular. Maybe we should make ME3 even MORE actiony.
2) Wow, we pandered to the Gears of War crowd hardcore and only 50% of the people beat the game. We should just stop and get back to our roots, eh?
I don't know; personally, I'd be pissed if I found out that only a small section of my user base was actually utilizing the greater portion of the game. That's like giving someone a free pass to Disneyland and finding out they ate at the McDonalds there and left. I'm wondering how BioWare will react to this. o.O

To be fair - I bet it's the same with almost all games - regarding how many people actually finish it.
I work in a rental shop and most of the games we rent out don't get finished. And Mass Effect 2 is a very long game, as well.

Living mostly in the fan art/fiction section of the world and not the hardcore gamer section, I find it interesting that 80% of the players use male Shepard, when it seems that 80% of the fan works revolve around a female one.

Obviously only a tiny fraction of ME players would write fan fiction; and fan fiction is a female-dominated field anyway. But yes, interesting dichotomy!

All my male Shepards have had the default face, too. My first Shep was the male soldier default, and he never seemed quite right looking different after that. Silly? Maybe! I've no trouble fiddling with the look of femSheps. As for ratio of played Sheps to written ones, I think lieden hit the nail on the head.

I had to create a different male Shepard than ol' Meathead when I first played as a maleshep. I'm pretty proud of the character I designed but I. Just. Can't. Change. The. Voice. EVER.

Well Glow I agree Meer sounded pretty flat in ME1. He has a lot less experience than Hale too. I thought he really improved in ME2. But then I pick up on people's vocal tone very easily and his delivery in ME 2 was something I was able to accept as genuine. Hale sounded a little forced in places. This is my own subjective opinion of course and I am not trying to start some kind of Hale vs Meer flame war.
