I admit, "Strangelove" did nothing for me when I first saw it 10-12 years ago. I watched it again late at night during the summer, and I really enjoyed it this time around. I think it was because Kubrick didn't "dumb it down for the masses". Good gravy, if anybody even attempted a remake today... ugh, I don't even want to finish the thought. The director would probably use LaBeouf and Megan Fox, and everything would just get worse from there. /puke

I will have to see Strangelove again, as soon as I can. Give it a fair chance.

If I watch it again lots of alcohol will be involved. It's not that it wasn't funny it just wasn't haha funny. The main thing for me was a movie with Peter Sellers in it that was heh funny instead of haha funny.
I only saw it last year and "got it", it's just after I "got it" I didn't want it.

Kind of shocked im the only Kubrick fan here : /
2001 made me believe sci fi could ascend to the level of high art, not just entertainment.

I love 2001, but haven't really seen many other Kubrick films. It was a fitting match to the books, very evocative and far, far ahead of it's time if you ask me. 2001 made me believe sci fi could ascend to the level of high art, not just entertainment. Gotta agree here.

I haven't seen Strangelove (it's in my Netflix queue, though), but I've seen a few of his other works. 2001 is very revolutionary and staggeringly beautiful at time, it was also way ahead of its time in terms of showing a realistic take on how we'd take to space in the future. But it is really boring; to me, at least.
I think I'll always like FULL METAL JACKET the best out of all his movies, with A CLOCKWORK ORANGE and THE SHINING tied for second. Emery's role as the drill instructor in FMJ should have won him like 10 Oscars, and I really liked the Kubrick-take on Vietnam.

One thing about "Clockwork Orange" (the movie) that people may not know about: despite it being filmed in London, Kubrick opted to use the ending that the American readers know best (as it turns out, the American publisher axed the original last chapter, which definitely changes the tone of the story). Anthony Burgess fought with the publisher for YEARS to get that added to the American books. In fact, I don't think he won that battle until the late 1980s (and most Americans have only ever seen the movie and never read the book). Despite it being his best known book, he said it was his least favorite.

I tried reading it, but Nadsat threw me off at the time. I've been wanting to give it another go, though. =D
