(First ME fic I ever wrote Based off my imagination going "WTF? Wait...how would the guys on the Normandy react to this!?!" when I saw the teaser trailer for the sequel, which is here if you haven't seen it --> www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIOaJA-apis <-- Warning, fic contains spoilers. Oh, and my Shep is Colonist/Sole Survivor/Paragade/Fell for Kaidan XD Anywho, on with the show PS: Bit of mild language from Joker)
Commander Soraki Shepard had been missing for six months, and Staff Lieutenant Kaidan Alenko was a silent wreck with worry. Not that he would admit it, of course.
It was a given that he would be worried - the whole f**king crew of the ship knew that he loved her, Joker thought smugly - but although he was nearly perfect at keeping a level head, Alenko was clearly close to cracking. Not a good thing when he was one of the people holding the f**king ship together these days. The incoming message that the Fifth Fleet admiral had just sent probably wouldn't help matters. One look at the title of the thing set off his paranoia alarm. Still...it was a necessary evil, and with a sigh he flicked on the in-ship comm. "Hey Alenko, Fifth Fleet just sent over a urgent message for you & Pressly, and trust me, you'll wanna see this."
Meanwhile, down at the ever-glowing orange screens by the CO's quarters, Kaidan Alenko sighed and wiped his forehead with a damp cloth, glaring at the small comm speaker nearby in the mess. "No thanks Joker. The last time you sent me something important, it was a hanar skin flick." He shuddered as the crippled pilot laughed at the memory of the prank. <There are something in life that you see...that you wish you could un-see...>
"What, my revenge not sitting too well on your conscience down there? Threatening to break my legs finally coming back to haunt you?" Kaidan rolled his eyes as his friend rambled. "Besides, this is 100% serious this time....or does the words 'top secret information' mean nothing to you?"
Glaring more fiercely at the comm now, he almost growled out another threat before his training kicked in. <Calm down, snapping Joker's legs won't do anything to help....her.....hmph, not like its going to be anything about her.> Nevertheless, he darkly entertained the thought. "What are you on about now, Joker?"
Up in the helm of the ship, the pilot grinned. "Aww, got out on the wrong side of the sleeper pods this morning Alenko? Or..." He grinned mischievously, "...are you just grumpy 'cuz you haven't been laid in six months since the Commander's been g--" There was a crackle of static from the speaker that was the machine's attempt at conveying a biotic corona's low hum. <O-kay, next stop broken legs.> "Hmph, fine, be that way. For that I might just not tell you..." The next five words made Alenko's blood run cold, even with the unnatural heat emitted by the orange monitors. "...that they found her." A pause. "Well, not really...but they found what happened---"
But Kaidan was already making a line towards the comm room.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Navigator Pressly wasn't surprised to see that Kaidan was already waiting for him in the comm room; after all, there was a chance that this was about Shepard, and not even a hint of what had happened to her for over half a year had clearly caused the lieutenant pain. "Now that everyone's here..." Joker's humor had drained away, making him sound oddly grave - definitely not a good sign. "Alright, here's the lowdown. Fifth Fleet intercepted some Cerberus files dated to two months ago and sent them to us. Good news - the files were about Shepard...bad news...well, you'll see." Joker pressed the play button, and the file started to roll on the vid-screen.
The datafile was a small database built up of information about Shepard, the basics; name, ship, DOB, notable acts in her career...all of which didn't interest Kaidan in the slightest - he knew it all. He was there for part of it. All the while a soft, slow beeping was audible in the background.
Then the last section of the database started.
"++++STATUS++++"
The beeping in the background started building up to a frantic pace at an alarming rate - accompanied by his heartbeats. He knew what that meant. And he didn't like it... especially considering who this data was about. Meanwhile, the blue box turned crimson.
<No...please...no....don't let it be what I think it is...>
"++++KILLED IN ACTION++++"
The usual siren-like alarm accompanied the statement, and each time it sounded the noise reverberated in his skull. The box around the message began flashing red, and it burned into his mind as he felt a slow despair creeping in.
<No....no no nonononono NO!>
He felt as if a fist had clenched around his heart, as he pleaded silently that it was a joke...that this wasn't real...Joker was just playing another prank, and any minuet now he'd come on the comm-system and tell them what the real news was.
But one look at the red box, the hated red box, silent and utterly final, and his hopes crumbled away.
"Kaidan....I'm sorry, man...." Joker sounded sympathetic but was cut off by the Normandy's XO. "Joker...not now..." The pilot sighed. "Roger Pressly."
He looked at the oddly silent biotic, standing there like a statue. "If there was anything we could've done to find her..."
No reply was given, none was needed as the unspoken question faded on Pressly's tongue, the question no-one wanted to hear. Instead, the old navigator bore witness to the biotic lieutenant's silent breakdown.
<She...she can't be gone...not after everything....>
Whispers of old memories surfaced in his mind - "I think about losing you and I can't stand it" - as his heart shattered like broken glass. <Sora...you promised...that you'd never leave...> He looked at the vid-screen. <And in all the time I've known you, you never break a promise. Why....did you break the only one that mattered?>
The emotion was tangible now, flickers of blue out in the corner of his vision as Pressly tactfully left, leaving Kaidan Alenko alone in the horribly empty room that felt too small, leaving him o stare at the fated message as his world fell apart in lonesome, broken silence. He was alone now....so very, very alone.
