The game's release date was recently announced! (July 27) StarCraft is my favorite Sci Fi game and my favorite strategy game, so I'm incredibly pumped.
The core gameplay itself, particularly the multiplayer is a very streamlined "gather resources, build base, train soldiers, build war machines, upgrade units, and attack your enemies" style gameplay that worked so well in StarCraft 1.
The Single Player however, is something I'm really looking forward to. It functions like a strategy game version of Mass Effect. You are a human space pirate/freedom fighter named Captain James Raynor, caught up in a galactic struggle between the evil dominant human faction known as the Dominion, the territorial and fundamental race of technologically advanced mystics known as the Protoss, and a nightmare army of insect like creatures known as the Swarm, or informally, the Zerg.
Throughout the single player story mode, you liberate worlds from the Dominion, recruit and rescue civilians and colonists from the world, fight against... or alongside different factions of protoss, try to find a way to defeat the ever growing and relentless zerg swarm, and of course command large armies and fleets.
James Raynor must also use diplomacy and build his image to gain popular support from independent colonies and dissident factions. But most of the time he is going to be working for science and mining companies to fund his pirate organization with Credits and legal tender. To do this, he must travel to planets (of the player's choice at any time) and do a wide variety of missions, such as plundering ancient artifacts or sabotaging rival mining operations. Credits are vital to upgrading your units. For example you can purchase new types of unit technology, like riot shields for your marines, cloaking devices for your fighters, or advanced reactors for your ships.
Inside the Hyperion, Raynor's flagship, he can work on the bridge to plan and execute missions, go to the ship's galley to hire mercenaries and take side missions, or to the hangar to upgrade technology.
There will be a cast of several characters which you can interact with via dialogue, having them share their opinions on the current state of affairs, or take with you to fight on the battlefield. Sergeant Major Tychus Findlay, Raynor's marine officer. Commander Matthew Horner, Raynor's second in command. Warrant Officer Roy Swann, the chief engineer who helps you upgrade your weapons. Dr. Connor, the science officer who salvages alien technology for you to use as your own. Gabriel Tosh, a psychic commando who serves as an intelligence officer. Zeratul a protoss assassin who Jim fought alongside in StarCraft I, and many others. There are also a few antagonists, such as Emperor Arcturus Mengsk, the dictator of the Dominion, and Queen Kerrigan of the Swarm, whom Raynor vows to kill after taking the lives of several of his friends.
