Here is one of my first Mass Effect Fanfictions. Though far from my first fanfiction altogether (probably my twenty-somthingeth story ive posted on the internet). This was orginally posted on Fanfiction.net on my account SharpScales. Though I do not enjoy posting on Fanfiction.net so I am wondering what the people here think.
Note that Firebay is not completed yet. I will soon post up a few more chapters to continue it's plotline. For now here are the first two out of a total of 6.
Mission to Firebay
Prologue
Johnstone slowly paced back and forth within the room. This particular room was supposed to be his “office” or something like that. Johnstone didn’t really want his office to be the former storage room, but he really didn’t have a choice. His desk was too small, his cabinets were too small, he even felt claustrophobic just walking around his small room. Johnstone was a thin balding human. His face, once handsome now showed dark lines of fatigue and age. The sword of time had indeed given it’s toll on the merc, but he didn’t mind. Johnstone took pride in his age and in his experience. Except in this particular situation
“Where is he?” Johnstone quickly sat down and booted up his computer console. Johnstone typed rather quickly, to the point of having his carpal tunnel return. He groaned in pain as he flexed his wrist for several seconds. As his muscles loosened a short beeping echoed throughout the room. Johnstone quickly answered his intercom.
“Sir he is here.” Johnstone gave a grunt of approval as he leaned back in his chair. His wrist, though still in pain, had loosened considerably. Johnstone quickly closed the open window on his console as he stood up. He heard a very loud echoing sound of footsteps outside of his door. Followed by the familiar click of the computer console outside opening the door. Johnstone slowly walked around his desk and made his way towards the figure standing in the doorway.
As soon as Johnstone finished walking he had to step back slightly to properly take in the figure standing in front of him. The figure was a rather tall batarian. His face bore dark yellow flesh, however around each of his four eyes were patches of brown, as if blanketing his eyes. His mouth was locked within a dark flushed downwards spiral. The batarian’s face in particular gave a pattern similar to a turian tattoo. As Johnstone slowly looked down at the rest of the batarian’s body he gave a puzzled look. The batarian wore a dark red hard suit. Scratches and dents appeared all around the medium armour. Indicating a previous confrontation recently. Nothing fancy, nothing to take pride in. Saddled to the batarian’s hip was a small pistol. The pistol appeared to be really the only unique touch to the batarian’s appearance. It was dark silver, yet had several nicks and scratches around it’s surface.
Johnstone reshuffled himself and began speaking. “So I hear good things about you.” His voice was hardy and full of life. The batarian didn’t shift his gaze.
“Lets hope so. Why did you ask my boss for my team specifically?” The batarian’s voice was harsh and distant. Like spreading sand paper on firm steel. Johnstone felt a ting of fear from the batarian’s intimidation he gave off.
“Well to put it bluntly. I heard about your mission to Metgos and what your team did there. After reading your report and how many credits you accepted I felt I needed your services.” Johnstone’s face bore a grin.
“Metgos was a bloodbath. I often find it odd when pirates decide to land there, set up faulty distress beacons and expect idiots to respond to them. Rest assured that I didn’t leave any alive. Anyway Johnstone what sort of stupid errand do you want my team to perform? Bare in mind I don’t work cheap.”
“Ah always to the point. Well come over here.” Johnstone pointed to his computer console. He quickly flicked it back on and returned to the page he was previously on. It was a map of the solar system the planet they inhabited was on. The batarian walked behind Johnstone’s desk and leaned on it
Johnstone pointed towards the planet we were on. “Here we are.” Then he slowly drew his finger towards a dull grey speck close to it. “Here is a recent picture from a krogan bounty hunter we saw pass through recently.” Johnstone withdrew his finger and leaned back in his chair. “You know how the krogans are. One minute they snap a picture for you. The next they get angry because you don’t pay them and can’t put their fingers off the triggers.” Johnstone yawned silently and sat upright. “This is what I want you to do.” Johnstone quickly typed in several commands. The speck enlarged itself to a much easier to recognise image
The spec was really a large starship. The starship had a cockpit at the far end encased within a glass dome. Around it were box-like structures and finally wings. The batarian gave off a strange look as he stared at the ship. “We detected recently some strange signals resonating within. I need you and your team to check it out.” The batarian’s facial expression changed. His mouth now bore a slight grin.
“Wouldn’t this be better for some of your dumb muscle? Why do you need my team to search some ship outside the planet?” The batarian asked in an amused tone.
“Because this ship just appeared here under a day ago. We didn’t detect anything on our sensors until it appeared. It didn’t come out of any FTL speeds either. It just appeared out of nowhere orbiting our planet. Obviously we are a little concerned so…” He gestured towards me. “I want your team to check it out.” The batarian gave him his grin again and slowly began walking out of his office. “As long as you give me my usual fee I don’t care what we do.” As the batarian began to leave he heard Johnstone call towards him again.
“Oh and Strife.” The batarian slowly turned after hearing his name. “Please do not try and blow up the ship for any reason. When I heard what happened on your last mission I kept wondering why you blew up that pirate base” The batarian shrugged as he walked out of the office.
