This game is awesome.
I'm someone who HATES first-person shooters with a passion, unless they're made by either Bethesda or Valve. I despise Halo; I think its music is the only thing that's original anymore. You sit and wait for a Halo sequel, and what do you get every time? A lackluster story, a few new guns and a couple new vehicles. THAT'S worth spending another $60?
I'm sorry if anyone here likes Halo, but I have a bad history with it.
But here comes Modern Warfare: a game that I never had the chance to play. I heard a lot of good things about its multiplayer and its status as the Halo-Killer. It just never crossed my mind.
A couple years pass, and I got Modern Warfare 2 randomly for Christmas. It was the big seller and my dad picked up on that and thought I'd like it. I really wasn't sure I would, since I thought it would be just like Halo; walk a few paces, shoot the same enemies over and over, walk a few more paces, repeat.
But damn. I started up a new game, and the campaign is one of the most exhilarating things I've ever played. Picture all the best parts of Half-Life 2, and then take out all the walking and puzzles, and compact them into a 6 hour game, and you've got MW2.
The action is amazing and continuous. It just never lets up. The story is fairly unpredictable and tense as well, since Infinity Ward has taken away the safety that you would normally feel; your character, as well as others that you travel with, can die for real in the storyline. =O
It honestly feels like you're running your way through a Die Hard movie. It becomes less about shooting endlessly and more about making you really feel like you're a soldier in war-torn America. The "Second Sun" level will make you shit bricks. xD
And the graphics are AMAAAAZING! Even on my small ass t.v., I was blown away. I had thought that Assassin's Creed II would remain at the top of that list for a long time as the prettiest game ever. MW2 crushed the life from it. There's extensive use of motion capture, and a game engine that makes everything look as close to real as you can get without losing framerate. It really helps to put you in the middle of the action.
I actually just got an Xbox Live gold subscription today and started playing multiplayer. It has a lot more strategy to it than Halo ever did, and it can get really crazy once people start racking up the kill count and call in missile strikes, helicopters, and nuclear missiles (which you cannot survive, obviously). And I love how it rewards you for doing even slightly well. You can gain experience points that allow you to gain perks, new weapons, classes, and titles that you can show off.
I'm loving this game. The campaign may have been very short, but it's been almost two weeks since I first played it and it still has a lot of replay value.
