Well I am a pretty mediocre man, you've got me there!
I can see your points for sure, and I could add a few extra criticisms of my own (for one the entire cast was ten years too young) but I still had a terrific time with the movie.

I would disagree on all accounts, Zarsy. I think the new actors were very true to the characters of the Original Series without blatantly emulating them. And, personally, I'm glad they got rid of the timeline; the story's been hijacked so many times lately by people who don't give a shit about it that the whole franchise was almost driven into the ground. (The director of Star Trek: Nemesis hadn't seen an episode of the show in his life.)
Abrams did a great job with the movie, and was more respectful to the story than the filmmakers of three of the last four Star Trek films (in addition to Star Trek: Enterprise). There are references from the Original Series and the movies in almost every frame. The only reason I can see someone not liking this movie is if they just weren't Star Trek fans to begin with. I know that was the case with a couple of my friends.

Woah Woah Woah Knight... before you accuse me of not being a star trek fan come voer to my house and check out my extensive collection and lets play Star Trek quiz. I've been an avid fan of the entire franchize my entire life I've even been to a couple of premieres in London. I may not be american star trek fan crazy about the series but its been a huge part of my childhood and adult life. Star Trek the movie took a shit all over the series. It was some director who may or may not actually respect the series having an ego wank and making a very poor rip off of star trek. At least Jame T Kirk in the series had a personailty beyond being a dick and yes I am fully aware of him also being a dick buit he had a broad spectrum of dickhoodery than the fake Kirk in the movie.
Seriously though knight, try and respect my god damn opinion before you throw accusations at me. I'm really insulted.

I think the target audience of Star Trek the Movie (or Star Trek XI as Blockbuster calls it) is people who quite like Star Trek - but aren't obsessive fans. So people who will enjoy references but not mind the surprise reboot.
Like me!

I'm not sure where the accusations came from. I thought we were talking about the movie, not anything of a personal nature. The only time I came close to disrespect was the assumption that you might not be a Star Trek fan, but how else was I supposed to know, eh? It's not like we talk about it frequently, and I certainly didn't think my jumping the gun in that regard would insult you. All of us have had many pleasant disagreements and debates here, and I'd never spoil that by saying anything intentionally hurtful.
I certainly never wanted to minimize your opinion. God knows we all have varied views of everything we discuss on this forum, but I truly apologize if I angered you. It's really not worth it to me to start an argument over a movie if someone gets hurt over it, and certainly not over Star Trek. =(

It was that statement that made you come across as being incredibly rude. It dissmisses all arguements against the movie as being the opinions of people who dislike Star Trek and thus there is no fault with the movie but rather with those that didn't have a completely enjoyable experience watching it. Additionally, because I didn't enjoy the movie and you did I'm not a Star Trek fan but a disliker of the franchize. I also find it strange you wouldn't have noticed I like Star Trek because we have actually discussed it before, me and you, but I suppose all of us forget things. It was just a very insensitive thing to say Knight but I know you probably didn't mean it.
But seriously I don't join the discussions of things I out right dislike. I don't like Dragon age at all but I don't join in those conversation because I don't like it and I don't see the point in arguing over something I don't give a damn about. I only join the discussions I do give a damn about so you can be sured if I join the conversation I like something enough about whatever that thing is to care and have experienced it.

Whooooah okay.
I just re-read the last few posts properly, and saw the row.

I'd be very grateful if we didn't have a personal argument here - this is supposed to be about bloody 'Avatar' anyway.

No, I'll readily admit that I said my piece with a lot more abandon than I usually do. It was an honest mistake. I can assure you, that I would never intentionally minimize anyone's opinion or say something rude. Never ever. I have too much respect for everyone on this site. Just wanted that to be known. =/
And yeah, sorry, Buch, I'll end it there. Just wanted that to be known.

You know who I <3? Colonel Miles Quaritch! I know I already talked about him already in like all my posts on this thread but seriously this guy is just frakkin Awesome, without him Avatar wouldn't have been that good too me.
I mean I think it was Buch that mentioned that he had that knife on his mech. How badass is that? Jake was a alright guy but most of the Giant Blue Cat Smurfs were just predictable. There's the love interest princess one, there's the old wise chief, there's the mystic...mystic and theres the douchbag warrior leader that was meant for the princess....
Hopefully we'll show them next time and just start bombing them. That will show those greedy smurfs to stand in our way of getting those precious metals.

From 'Private Eye' magazine. This joke will only make sense to UK-based members. But I thought it was quite funny. twitpic.com/uovj7
