...and never... ever... got over it...
Seriously, I'm getting passively annoyed by fundamentalist Dark Knight fans who think its the best film ever and how it will go down as the number one film in history.
Firstly, I enjoyed the Dark Knight when it was released. Nolan's Batman series most certainly deserves respect from yours truly, since it is far more true to the DC Universe than any of the previous films. I want to like it, but if anything the rabid fans are making me hate it.
Raiding IMDb? Harassing Jack Nicholson with angry emails? Consistent denouncing of other classics such as the Godfather and Casablanca? Getting pissed off at a top 100 villains list (made in 2005) for not including Heath Ledger's joker?
I'm glad I haven't met very many of these saps in real life.

*Covers up his Dark Knight poster*
Don't get me wrong, I thought The Dark Knight was an excellent movie, especially after the semi-okay Batman Begins (thought it was kinda slow at times, and I don't like Katie Holmes...or David Goyer for that matter).
But I would agree that the hype that followed it was of Twilight-like proportions. Like, The Dark Knight had to be the best movie in all categories. Personally, I thought Heath Ledger deserved his Oscar, and I was semi-thinking that it could have been possible for it to get a Best Picture nod (though I wouldn't begin to compare it to Slumdog Millionaire, which was a much better film).
It is sort of a weird thing. I'm not sure what exactly led that movie to become what it was. Maybe it was Heath Ledger's death combined with people reviewing it like it was gonna win Oscars right then and there. I couldn't say; I've thought about it quite a bit. It's an interesting cultural phenomenon.
The Godfather and Casablanca were great movies, but I'd much rather watch Batman and the Joker duke it out than Humphrey Bogart getting all emo for two hours. >=)

The idea of comparing it to movies like Casablanca is crazy. It might be a prudish attitude from me, but... this is a movie in which a superhero chases an evil clown on a special bulletproof motorbike. You cannot compare it to Casablanca.
I do believe Ledger deserves his Oscar. And I think 'The Dark Knight' was an excellent superhero film, and a very good film. As you say though - it became incredibly popular. Became a massive phenomenon, and Heath became a fashion symbol. Like Jack Skellington.
I also don't like Katie Holmes. Her presence in Batman Begins was a major turn off for me. Also Liam 'My vocal chords and face are immovable and made of wood' Neeson as the classic Batman villain, Some Irish Ninja Guy Who Is Apparently In The Comics.
Dark Knight wasn't perfect either. Christian Bale's Gravelly Batman Voice is ridiculous, and they killed off Two-Face like, fifteen minutes after introducing him. I suppose there was no way not to kill him and retain that excellent ending, but still. Batman Forever was more respectful to Two-Face.

I have mixed feelings about Dark knight. Bale = shite Ledger = best joker/acting I'd seen in years
That kind of balanced the Bale badness but then the story.... Yeah it followed close to the original comic but it had so many issues. The surprises were to obvious. Sometimes I felt like I was being dragged through the film rather than allowed to watch it. Generally the scenes with Bale hurt... bad. It was a great piece of production poorly executed with a great actor and a wank actor. Now don't get me wrong there is so much of that movie that impresses and astounds me but at the same times there is so much that I just shake my head at. On the subject of comparing that movie to Casablanca and Godfather you can't really do that. Dark knight was a super hero action movie. Casablanca was far more intellectual and the Godfather... I have nothing to say about the Godfather. It was an OK movie but it took its sweet ass time. My point is they all have there own strengths and weaknesses.

I actually was utterly bored by the Godfather. I have little interest in any of these films about 'how damn cool organised crime is' and Godfather was just... so long and I had no idea who anybody was.
It insists upon itself.

I enjoyed the Dark Knight while I agree with some points like bale's "tough guy" voice is stupid and Two-Face didn't get enough screen time.
One of my favourite parts of the movie was Gary Oldman as Commisioner Gordon, who looks strangely like my late grandmother minus the moustache.
I'm hoping they don't cast Megan Fox as Catwomna in the sequel like the rumour persists. I'd prefer an actress in the role.

I agree - Megan Fox's inclusion would just be such an insult. I actually think she's a decent actress, but I just don't think she could hold her own in one of these Nolan Batman films. Also she seems rather young to me.
These Nolan Batman films are an interesting thing. I really like them, but every time I hope it's the last one, because I don't want him to make a big series out of them and mess them up. Only two film series that I know of (Indiana Jones and LOTR) ever kept their high quality all the way to the third film. And no-one ever made four good ones.

My cast choices for other Batman characters:
Robin - Thomas Haden Church (Mercenary or former military intelligence agent)
The Riddler - Steve Buscemi (Would be a cyber terrorist and master manipulator)
Bane - Michael Chiklis (Steroid or other enhancement induced thug; maybe a minor villain)
Poison Ivy - Jodie Foster (Ecoterrorist)
Harley Quinn - Helena Bonham Carter (Same as she was in the comics, though it may be impossible to fit her in as she was always involved in a Joker plot)
Catwoman - Eva Green (Nonviolent burglar)
The Penguin - Philip Seymour Hoffman (Smuggler and racketeer)

I really liked the original penguin.
I like your casting of Jodie Foster! She's one of my favourite actresses even though she has done a few acting boo boo's I can't help but forgive her because of her general awesomeness.
Jim Carrey and Arnie should never ever under any circumstances be allowed anywhere in the vacinity of a batman movie EVER! I demand a restraining order!

Interesting choices! Although I don't like Helena Bonham Carter very much... and I think she'd be betraying her husband by taking the role! Also, honestly, someone younger and more conventionally attractive is needed for Harley Quinn.
I absolutely love your choice for the Penguin! But I also love Burgess Meredith (and Danny Devito for that matter) in the role - Penguin is always well-cast. Ya gonna eat thunder and crap lightning, Batman! Quaaaack quack quack...
And here is what made the Penguin so wonderful in the day.......
-- -- I actually saw The Dark Knight again yesterday, and I must say it really holds up. I loved it - again.
And I think what makes Ledger such a good Joker is that he mixes-together elements from the other three great Jokers - Jack Nicholson's likability and showmanship, Mark Hamill's banter and undercurrent of creepy evilness - and Cesar Romero's voice and laugh! Seriously - when Ledger laughs or does the scary voice for 'Hit me!' or 'Why so serious?' he is flat-out doing an impersonation of Romero. And I love him for it. I remember seeing the trailer and calling up to my brother, "The new Batman film is going to be great! Joker has the voice of Cesar Romero!!"
I think what lets Ledger (and the Nolan films in general) down is that it's rather different to the traditional image of Joker, and Batman. Here Joker's suit and make-up are natty, his face isn't angular, he's stooped and his style of comedy is very relaxed and self-depricating.... things like that. Similarly, there is a scene where Batman airlifts a guy from a building in Hong Kong, and during the day I think. I just never expected to see Batman in either Hong Kong or daylight.
