So after I said we weren't going to buy a copy of Borderlands ... Daniel bought a copy of borderlands the cheeky bastard. The only redeeming feature about him buying it was that he got it off a guy he knew for £20 brand new and believe me none of that profit is going to the game company.
This is my review of it...
Graphics
The graphics are like a compliation of Gears of War and Eternal Sonata. That kind of, you can't tell the difference between a rock and your buddy because they are the same shades of grey and brown whilst giving everything random cartoony dark lines occassionally.
It looks good if you're standing still and just started playing the game but quickly it becomes annoying and a hinderance. Also also incredibly boring.
For that reason the Graphics get:
1/5
Music
I calss the soundtrack as completely seperate from voice and sound effects. They are not the same thing.
Borderlands soundtrack is actually fantastic. I haven't come across such a good blend of music and well executed bites of sound in a long time. Every piece from the atmosphereic to the leveling up music is perfect.
5/5
Voice acting and sound design
I personally love the fact that my character (Hunter class) sounds like Anthonio Banderas swearing and laughing evily. That aside though, the voice acting is cliche for the most part but well done cliche. However, half the cast seem to be voiceless, this sort of thing always annoys me when you have characters that are part of your game play for hours but only talk through text...
Sound design is what you'd expect it to be. explosions. Nothing special. Its just the norm.
2.5/5
Character design
Well you have your 4 people. The big crazy white guy. The deranged looking possibly mexican guy. The black guy and the chick.
We've been playing with the black guy and Anthonio Band-- I mean the possibly mexican guy. We both took one look at the white dude and thought "Douchbag" and then at the chick with her souless eyes and clevage on display... God those eyes are souless. Did she used to be a hooker?
The characters have no personality past making wacky statements now and then. There is no back story we've xcome across in the 20+ hours we've played the game. They're just some dudes on Pandora looking to kill some guys and steal some loot.
Black guy and white dude pretty much look like the same person. Anthonio and the chick are equally skinny little bitches but at least Anthonio has a funky beard. He's stands like he's taking a shit though.... constantly. They all run like the 1st Gay scouts aswell. Generally we try not to look at each others characters.
You can also change the colours of your clothes at any save station but theres no point. You're always wearing grey/brown changing the colour makes no difference to this.
Also the other characters in the world are populated by the same character modles repeated. You will always fight the bare chested guy, the guy witht he mask, the bare chested guy with the mask, the midget and a alien dog. You'll also always get missions from either an annoying little robot or a guy with a surgeons mask on that only talks in text.
1/5
Weapons and specials
The weapons are the best bit about the game. They're all randomly generated but you can find some pretty nifty items running around. Today we found a shotgun that shoots rockets. Awesome.
You also get shields and can find some odd add ons for those as well as bonus items that increase your specific characters characteristics. You find weapons and ammo constantly aso you never need to worry about money to much or running out of ammo unless the game is having oen of tis retarded moments which we've had a lot of. Soemtiems the game will freak out and only give you one type of ammo for a few hours. Its very annoying when this happens but over all it works.
You also get a special ability with each type of character. These are incredibly useful and a lot of fun. You do them up by using points you recieve by leveling up. RPG moment. You also level up your ability with weapons by using them.
4.5/5
Game play
You need to play with someone. On your own its boring as fuck. You NEED to play with someone.
The game consists of little worlds you travel to via teleportation points. Each map seem to just be the same dusty roads pocketed with enemy spawening points and some shacks that have crates that refil everytime you get far enough away. Its like Mario world in 3D but grey/brown and retetivly boring.
Basically you spend all your time collecting side quests, doing them, coming back and collecting your reward then doing some more untill it lets you do a main mission.
The main missions are just bigger side quests. The game should be renamed, 'Go to point a and kill some dudes please'. Its fun for the first couple of hours then you start to think "Hey didn't we do this five minutes ago?" Then you get some really unforgiving side quests and spend your time hearing Anthonio screaming 'I will not die!' whilst trying to kill something on the floor or have your buddy heal you. Then envitably you get respawned at a save point through a wormhole of swirling blue like they suddenly remembered this is technically a sci-fi game.
When you are finally on a god damn main mission you get this woman whose IS cortana from Halo talking to you. She likes to tell you every once in a while how good a job your doing, that there really is a storyline to this game and not to shoot her favourite rabid monster but luckily you won't see enough of her to care.
Oh you also get a car. But its a piece of mako shit.
1/5
Overal the game looks and feels like some guys who really liked Halo 3, Eternal Sonata, Fall out 3 and Gears of War got together and hatched this abomination. Its fun for the first couple of hours but then its so stale and repetitive even a new world to visit doesn't bring any relief to the pure grind side questing.
Its fun to play with a friend once in a while but its not the kind of game you're ever going to want to sit down and play for hours. Its what the British call Wank.
Daniel and Grace give it a 6/10 as a multiplayer and a 4/10 as a single.
