So I got back a lil while ago from the cinema with Daniel. Finally got to see District 9 and it didn't disappoint. Though I will say one thing. I wanted more aliens and some rioting. Little to many human characters but it was unusual. Was a little miffed that weird looking robot from the short film didn't get in the movie. That was a pretty damn amazing robot the one we did get was a bit to gundam for me but it kicked ass! The main alien characters were a lot of fun. They weren't your typical aggressive shells of a human marine bullshit which was really nice. I can't talk about the good stuff because I might be spoiling the movie for someone. Just know, it was fucking awesome and I'm giving it a 8.5/10.

I liked this one a lot. Probably the best film I saw at the cinema this summer, but that's not out of many, and the competition is poor.
The acting in particular was amazing, mainly from the lead, who I hope we see more of in films. I also really liked the simple but effective story, the understated special effects and the choice of setting.
Very nice idea to set their race parable in South Africa, and they even made a clever nod at the beginning, pointing out deliberately that this 'didn't happen in New York', but an ordinary, unexciting place. I love any movie that deliberately isn't set in New York or somewhere glamorous. This film fearlessly gave us strong South African accents, dialogue and names. (However I thought they subtitled the heavy-accented/black characters a bit too much.)
I'll give some criticisms, just to look clever. I thought the race metaphor was too heavy-handed and the battle scene went on for far too long and became less potent. I read a review today which said it was too similar to the remake of 'The Fly', and I agree with that. And I could have done without the big robot, and there was a little too much swearing. These are all pretty minor points. Also, cute kid characters along for the ride annoy me.
Also - I really, really thought that the bladdy prawns' eyes were too big and cartoony. Those eyes made it impossible for me to take them seriously as characters. So in contrast to Zars I was wishing they had less screen-time. Purely because of the eyes.
EDIT: That same review also pointed out how impressive it is that we end up 'rooting' for Wicus after the way he behaves in the first act. Good point I think. It's great storytelling that can make us care about someone like that.
7 out of ten from me. Good film, and the best sci-fi I've seen since 'Serenity', but not fantastic.

Is it? I don't fancy it, judging from the trailers. Also, I'm hoping to read the book this year, and I don't want to spoil it.
Fun fact: It was Oscar Wilde's first novel. He commented that 'every first novel has the author as either Christ or Faust' or words to that effect. I like that quote. I looked at my abandoned first novel and laughed when I read that.

*Looks at her own first novel* Christ aye? Shit I think he might be right there the main characters did die in kind of ... christy way I guess. lol
That kid was my favourite character. Even Daniel liked him. I just think for an alien movie there was way to many humans and the only aliens apart from the two main ones seemed to have a lack of personality. That bugged me which was why I wanted to see more aliens.
I agree about the south African accent subtitles. I understood them all perfectly. lol It was interesting how the movie was sets of gray. Both races were having good and bad parts to like and dislike about them. I really wanted to dislike the human's a little more though and the lead human wasn't winning me over. I felt sorry for him sure but he was still a cock.
