While all these flashy moden games are staring at me now, luring me to swap my cash for their shiny new game boxes, I would like to take a moment for me to discuss my wishful thinking.
If there's one particular in this world where I would love to see both a remake and the series gets revive, before I die... it would be Fear Effect series.
While I have to admit this game isn't the most perfect. Too much sexualisation for the sake of attention, gameplay is a little tad linear, puzzles might drive a trigger happy person insane and loves causing controversy that make Mass Effect's Love scene put to shame in scale of outrage; but the has it's own appeal and charm that it deserves to be revive and unleash itself into the public.
First of the Art Direction. At it's time it was revolutionary where the developers used Cel-Shaded for their graphics instead of using the usual detailed textures, giving the game a comic/anime look. Not only it looks pretty back in the day, but even now the game ages really well in regards to the graphics. Despite it's cartoonish look, the game does have a nice gritty, cyberpunk feel to it. This game proves you DON'T NEED to have brown in the art scheme to make it gritty and realistic. Take note developers!
Also another that appealing (well for me anyways), is the storyline and characters. For a game that inspried from the Resident Evil series, this game is jam-packed with deeper plotlines and characters that lively and intetresting. The game took the Chinese mythology and twist it with a Cyberpunk/horror feel to it.
In the first game it revolves around a half Chinese assassin named Hana, who has to find a run away daughter of the Crimelord. Sounds simple at first but then later it turns out that his girl has a deeper connection to hell, where she's merely a puppet of the lord of the dead, who wanted to take over the mortal plane so he can make more room to imprison the dead souls.
In the second game it focus on Hana's last assignment that lead up to her connection with her assosiates, Glas and Deek, where their assignment were caught up into a heavenly conflict due to their 'client' made a bloached attempt to perminantly 'quieten' them. This game also introduces Hana's love interest, Rain who has a deeper conection with the sinister plan behind all of this.
As I've said before the characters were colourful at best. From the ruthless female fatale Hana to Glas, the cyinical hunter who prefers to shoot first and ask questions later. This game also tackles the homosexual relationship between Rain and Hana in an almost honest perspective. I've said almost because the developers likes to use this relationship to cause attention in the promotional ads but in the game ,it's honest enough it doesn't sexualised too much, instead it focus the emotional connection between them.
Despite the moderate sucess, the thrid instalment of the Fear Effect that supposed to be released on the PS2, has been canceled due to Edios shutting their studio down in the lack of funds. Even more sad, before they shut themselves down, the developers knew it before hand and tried to sell their ideas to other studios and publishers but no one wants to accept it. So the series have disappeared into the ocean for good.
Like all the other gamers, I do have a wishful thinking that I want to see the series revive itself again. Not only it has potential to be a sleeper hit in this moden age but also I would love to see the series developed futher in plotwise, especially the relationship conflict between Hana and Rain. And the gameplay... although it's a bit dated but a remake to fit the moden times would be actually interesting to see. So that's my wishful thinking for the day.
