I was just reminded of an old Elton John song I like. He wrote with his writing partner Bernie Taupin - about how much they were enjoying writing songs for a living now that they were making some money and really getting into it. Seeing as a few of us are just getting into and discovering writing as a hobby, it seemed appropriate

Very appropriate.
Have to say kudos to them for not only doing things they enjoyed for a living but Songwritting is not an easy practice in terms of writting. Takes a lot of dicipline and dedication to write for the music.

I've always suffered with writing song lyrics. Actual music is easy to me but those damn lyrics annoy me. I tend to write comedy songs or get someone else in to do my lyrics as you can probably tell by my only song on myspace with lyrics is about a cup of tea and being a glutton for sugar. Lyric writers I am always in awe of. Its like writing poetry but harder.
This song has me in awe at its lyrics. Someone really worked on this song. Its like a great fantasy novel in song form.
By the way if you haven't watched that movie its worth it.

Now that song is one of my favourite songs ever ever. Yes you all must watch the film or just buy the record. 'Wicked Little Town' is beautiful too.
I've been trying to write poetry lately, and it's not easy. I listen to songs and think that it must be easier to write lyrics than poems. My thinking is that the words don't have to be as clever and the structure can be repetetive. Song lyrics ought to be easier because the music does half the work of entertaining the audience - in a poem the words have to be good enough by themselves.
Discuss.

That is a damn good son as well. Hey Buch? Global Moderator?
Anywho, Lyrics have to be set into a specific structure, rhythm and they must make sense in telling a story. Its very difficult to do that. Poems are easier in my opinion because you're not strapped down. You can just flow it out anyway you want to and go off on a tangent.

Temporary moderator, I'm afraid. See the news thread.
I see your point about the freedom you have with poems.
