Well, we all have our moments that made us squirm and quaking in our boots when we're writing a part in our stories that tend to either: a) feeling disturbed or b) churning our stomachs. Same goes to reading something that made us want run like a girl.
So here are my moments in writing and reading:
In chapter 5 of The Human Flock, there's a part where *SPOILER ALERT* Dagger, Ralph's right hand, almost sexually assaulted Shepard but being a tough as nails kind of character, she managed to fight off him successfully. Or course I wasn't intending to add something degrading or terrible for thrills, I just want want to portray Shepard as a type of character that is headstrong and had the ability to control her will... most of the time. Still despite not intending to add a graphical scene, I cannot helped but feeling awkward about it.
I have a confession to make and I'll only confess this once. So don't ask me again otherwise I'll redirect your questions that relates to me writing up 'romantic' scenes to here. I'm a prudish writer. I do not like writing up about graphical description of "Rod A was carefully inserted into slot B". My technique when writing is using visualisation in my head. So I write up scenes that I can see them as if it was filmed and let me tell you sometimes the film is not pleasant to watch sometime if you're walking inside my head. That's one reason why I don't like writing such detailed intimate scenes especially the fact I'm still recovering myself from the after effects being "broke-up-because-my-ex-is-a-cheating-git" syndrome for 6 months now.
Another reason why I do not like to write about the intimate scenes is because it's hard to write a good one. I'm serious. I'm not the best person to write about it. There's a danger of turning the scene into a cringe worthy moment as you can see in my sig is a good smile about writing a bad one. also the fact there's a danger that such scenes can ruin story pacing and at worse cases the story and the character themselves.
Apart from that, there's another thing I've recently realised that I'm awkward at in writing: rotting dead bodies. Yes, I'm pretty wimpy when it comes to extreme gore and decaying corpses. (That's probably why I didn't enjoy my Undead priest much as my Night Elf Hunter in WoW.) I'm kinda surprised that the prologue to Portrait of her Reflection which is centered around a badly damaged and beaten corpse that is decaying, is written ok. Despite my phobia in decaying corpses, I'm coping this phobia a bit better now when I've recently started to read Frank Bender's Biography Girl with a crooked nose, which is all about reconstructing dead corpses that are badly damage due to bloody circumstances.
As for reading things that made me quake in my boots, well there's a lot more. Mostly from fan fictions that I can't remember on the top of my head, but I'm pretty sure the ME fan fiction community so far isn't bad as far as I've know of when exploring other ppl's fan fiction on FF.net. Still I can't remember the ones that stick that made me run like a girl.
With publish novels... well there's two that stick out in my head. Breaking Dawn from the Twi... uh I mean "Bella-and-Edward-in-OMGWTF-romantic-RPG-adventure" saga. The Birth of the little imp scene... I haven't read it but from one of my friend's account in class the other day just... scares the crap out of me. More scarier than reading Girl with a crooked nose at 3 am in the morning. I'm glad I've haven't read BD yet otherwise due to the explicted gore scene, I'll won't even stomach playing ME2 with the new combat system...
Another one I'm unfortunate to stumbled across while reading TV Tropes is Knights Moves. All I can sum up in one sentence... That's a perfect example why writing up a intimate scene is hard than it sounds.
Any, that's my account. So what are your moments that made you quaking in your boots unintentionally in a bad way when either writing or reading?
