I know people tend to hate on the elevators in ME1 for how long/slow they are, especially the elevator for the Citadel Tower. But then I got to thinking. Are the elevators really that slow?
Per the Codex, the Citadel Tower is just over one kilometer in length. The elevator takes roughly 30 seconds to travel that distance once it starts moving. Basic math says that's two kilometers per minute or 120 km/h. Not exactly "slow" by any stretch of the imagination.

Then we have Noveria where the elevator is only going up about 100 feet and takes the same amount of time.
Don't get me wrong, I didn't really mind them too much but what they really were was a way of masking the load screens. That's kinda cool, but why is a PC taking every bit as long to load as the X-box? Actually that answer is as it is for every other aspect of that especially shitty port, Demiurge.
One thing I am hoping for with the new gen is a reduction in load screens in favour of more of a streaming kind of module where you have one load and everything else loads as you play with no load screens. It was and remains truly neat how Dungeon Siege had one load screen at the start and if you were able to sit there at one sitting and play the whole thing that entire world was just there...no load screens, just go where and when you want. I've noticed that atleast for the individual planets SWToR does that. But it's not something seen outside of PC exclusive MMOs.

Noveria's elevator would probably be considered fairly quick by today's standards. 30 seconds to travel nearly 10 floors isn't exactly slow.
Then again, I'm speaking strictly from a plausibility standpoint. I know they were just basically loading screens. Fortunately for me, I didn't have to deal with the infamous elevator glitch that plagued the PC Gaming Master Race.

Ugh, that damn glitch. Again, Demiurge.
I just thought the squaddie conversations were pretty awesome.

The convos were awesome. Especially when you had Wrex in your squad.

Nearly everything in the original Mass Effect that everyone loves to complain about (Elevators, omni-gel, the Mako) are things I had no problems with or actually kinda liked.

Me too Cali. I actually thought the elevators were a neat little trick to help to maintain immersion. And the Mako was just fun, at least in the main missions. Think how much more fun Tuchanka in ME2 would have been if there was a vehicle section! Or Thessia in ME3 in a little gunship or something.

That's the thing I love about ME1: when you're flying around the galaxy and exploring, the Mako sections made the universe feel truly expansive. Sadly, missing from the sequels.

Well the Hammerhead sure as hell didn't count. Who the hell armours an APC with tinfoil? Oh right, the same organization who tries to counter Reaper indoctrination by using Reaper indoctrination on their people.
My main beef with the vehicle sections outside the main missions was the topography of the planets. It really was not very fun climbing over cliff after cliff after cliff...
But the main quest sequences were really nicely designed and very fun.
But hey, the Mako lives on in spirit in SWTOR. One of the Bounty Hunter companions is called Mako.

I liked the elevator rides - it was more interesting than a loading screen, and the conversations were funny.
I didn't like the decontamination chamber though. That irked me.

I don't know... I know of one decon chamber that isn't too bad. Of course that's because of the presence of T'Pol and Hoshi Sato.
