As the poll asks: which species would be your top five picks to be your alien sidekick and why? Also note that while I ask after "sidekick" you can also view it as bringing a crew together a la Commander Shepard.

In no particular order for me.
Asari. As you all are aware, I have a thing for the asari. What's not to like about a hot blue alien chick who can kick some serious ass when needed but can also be diplomatic when violence isn't a viable solution? Bonus points if they're of the Aria T'Loak or Matriarch Aethyta schools of badassery and awesomeness. Besides: as the turians say "The asari are the finest warriors in the galaxy. Fortunately, there aren't that many of them."
Vulcans. Chosen because of the demonstrated awesome that is Spock and Tuvok. Like the asari, vulcans make damn good advisers and can be very good fighters when needed. An unexpected benefit of their coldly logical exterior is how intimidating they can be, making them good interrogators, to say nothing of mind-melding.
Romulan. Masters of subtlety and typically quite patient and methodical in their machinations. Despite their secretive nature and tendency to use underhanded tactics, they are also capable of fighting with honor, as demonstrated by Donatra when she aided Picard against Shinzon.
Klingon: do I really need to talk about how awesome they are? Alright, I'll humor you. Klingons are among the finest warriors known in Star Trek and their focus on living honorably makes them as loyal a friend as anyone can make provided you maintain honor as well.
Kzin. From Larry Niven's "Known Space" universe (and featured in some Star Trek: The Animated Series episodes that Niven authored), the Kzinti are anthropomorphic space tigers that can be summed up by a human soldier's description of them in the Known Space spin-off series "The Man-Kzin Wars" as being "eight feet of death". Incredibly warlike and obsessed with honor and integrity, they're not a race I would make enemies with lightly. One thing to remember: do not grin at them as baring teeth at a Kzin is considered to be equal to backhanding a Klingon: it's a challenge to battle that few of them will back down from.

Almost the same, but I've swapped out asari for a turian instead. Mainly I've prefer a space roman on my ship. Not a fan of the asari to be honest.

I think that they writers of Mass Effect played up the whole "open thinking sensuality" of the asari way too much. According to the codex of ME1, asari commandos are supposed to be some of the most dangerous enemies one can face. Yet another victim of the "green alien chick" trope.

Yeah, that's one of the reasons why I find the whole race to be meh, due to dodgy portrayal in the games and let's not go into that whole thing about Thessia. It's all said and done, no need to dig up the hatchet.
Although I would welcome that sort thing, IF it's in the same vein as Lady Snowblood.
But yeah, if it's decently portrayed, then I would like them much better.

Time Lord. They know the hottest chicks and practice a celibate lifestyle.

A Protoss. Preferably a dark templar or some sort of skilled fighter pilot. Maybe a bit of both.

Turian: Because they're badass - especially if they're anything like Garrus Vakarian.
Krogan: Amazing fighters.
Asari: Asari Commandos, Matriarch Atheyta, need I say more?
Salarian: Because they are intense thinkers and can be awesome badasses a la Mordin Solus and Captain / Major Kirrahe.
Other: Quarian: Because they are technological geniuses.
I know I picked only from the Mass Effect universe, but I am not a Star Trek fan and not much of a Star Wars fan, so I know next to nothing about the other choices on the list.

This is for my Smuggler/Bounty Hunter/Space Adventurer guy who wants to make a "honest" living in the omniverse.
Wookie: Because they are masters of pulling arms out of their sockets. Of course he is my Co-pilot. Klingon and a Krogan: Honourable fighter guys, probably have to keep them apart sometimes. Comic relief with some personal drama behind both their backstories. Time-Lord: Good at tech with their sonic screwdrivers and knowledgable about stuff. In my headcanon this one lost his/her TARDIS hence he/she is traveling with me. Perhaps a ongoing storyline about trying to return home to Galifrey. Second in Command. Twi'lek: I fancy the blue/green/red alien babe variety so there. Think Darth Talon except good guy/gal. Love interest. Zergling: Guard dog, disconnected from the Overmind. Cuz I love Zerg.
I noticed my crew is very Farscape...
