Just thought I would pass this news in case it's of interest to anyone. The confusing 'online passes' on Xbox360 games are being dropped, which means that old content meant as a reward for buying new games is being made free. This includes Zaeed, the Cerberus pass, Shale in Dragon Age and a few little extras in DA2. Not sure if it includes anything for ME3.... I don't know if anyone else falls into the niche that this is good news for, but there you go. For me it meant that I could re-download Shale and a few other bits after I had originally deleted them to make room for the Cthulu-esque abomination of insanity that was the Citadel DLC. And to think only a month ago I very nearly paid full price to get Shale back. Thank God I went out instead, or today I would have been livid.

So they made it retroactive. Interesting.
I am of course looking to see what fresh horrors they plan to unleash on us in the future in it's place seeing as online passes never impacted me at all.

Oh that sucks... Zaeed was one of the better characters I hope things can be fixed so she can get that one...

It worked for me last night - try again? I downloaded Zaeed and the Firewalker pack (those crap missions with the hovercraft.)
Tell her she has to download a small, pointless thing called 'Cerberus Pass' first - and then from the game's own menus she can get Zaeed etc. If she hasn't tried that.

You can also get that Scottish archer for Dragon Age 2, and 'The Black Emporium' which is the room where you can change your face mid-game and there is some swag in it too.

I'm pretty sure that the Scottish Archer from DA 2 was actually from a paid DLC. I never got him. The Black Emporium was the main swag from the online pass of DA 2 and it's pretty decent.

I think it's because X-Box one reveal was such a fucking disaster, this is damage control. I really cannot understand how the reveal was disastrous. People were complaining about Microsoft's emphasis on the television, so what? People's resistance to change is baffling to me. Gaming consoles have been a gradual evolution to the "ultimate entertainment system". That is what both Sony and Microsoft have been striving for. Before anyone quotes Sony's moronic development supervisor with his quote regarding it being, "First and foremost, a gaming console," of course he would say that. Prior to the public's childish tantrums regarding the emphasis of television with the Xbox, I am sure Sony would have put the same, if not more emphasis. What consoles are trying to achieve is the ideal entertainment system. Television, internet, and gaming all combined into one. What many people fail to realize is that such a system has existed for years. It is known as the PC. What people should be complaining about is the technology behind both of the consoles. Before I begin, I would like to preface my opinion by saying that I am a firm believer in PC gaming, especially for technology and immersion, but I understand the price constraints. That is why people purchase consoles. But what I cannot understand is why people go out of their way to complain about the technology behind a system with no interchangeable or improvable parts... but I digress. Both companies have cushioned the blow with yet another console release by raving about the CPU, graphics, and processing power. Big woop. Xbox 360 has 8 gigs of ram. THREE gigabytes of that ram is dedicated to the persistent OS, and is in the same boat with its Japanese counterpart. Its camera supports full 1920x1080 HD. PS4's camera can only support a poor 1280x800. Oh, and unlike the Xbox's interchangeable hard drives (allowing for the usage of SSD drives later), PS4 still persists in its internal mechanical hard drive. Thanks, Sony. Other than that, they share the same CPU power, equivalent graphics card and memory, as well as the same wireless adapters. They will be outdated in six months after their release. But you know what? All of this is standard with the progression of consoles. I don't see any reason for the big fuss behind it. People should be pissed with Windows 8, not Xbox One.

Anyone who owns a smart TV knows how useless the ancillary add ons tot eh Xbone was. A modern TV does all the social network things that the Xbone does and then some. I don't use consoles myself but I get the appeal. They used to be simple to use. Plug in and play. Now there are as many fussy barriers and DRMs and user fussing in a console as in a PC. The convenience factor is going away, all for a bunch of nonsense that other devices do far better. I guess it really is too much to ask that a gaming console... just be a gaming console. There is also a big middle finger being stuck up at the used game market. A continued arrogance at the refusal to allow backwards compatibility... Oh hell just watch the video I linked in the xbox reveal thread www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/jimquisition/7358-Xbox-One-out-of-Ten?utm_source=latest&utm_medium=index_carousel&utm_campaign=allJim Sterling is an obnoxious prick but he is often an obnoxious prick with a pretty good point. he says it all and wraps a nice tidy bow around it.

There is hardly any fuss at all. Hell, you do not even need your own console or memory card in order to play with your account and savefiles. Consoles are still just as simplistic as they were ten years ago. Demonstrate to me how the Xbox One, PS4, or even the PC is overly complicated or inconvenient. There is no practicality in making a product that is not progressive. Why limit to purely gaming when there are multiple markets and audiences to tap into? Backwards compatability is not practical, nor is it possible with the progression of technology. One cannot simply port a twenty year engine/game onto an octa core with Dx11 running on a GTX 680-780. It is up to the developers of the games to produce or, rather, reproduce older content for modern technology. Jim Sterling is an obnoxious, unreasonable prick.

We're gonna have to agree to disagree here. Every console generation is putting up more crap between the gamers and the games. The online requirement to even have the thing is beyond retarded. They have already changed their tune several times on how much or long online that has to be. So I don't believe a word they say about it being only once a day. What other markets are they pushing for here? They are trying to put up a competing system in place of devices that are already doing it better than a console ever could. This applies as much to the PS4 as it does to the xbone. So now we are going to have smartphones, PCs, smart TVs and consoles that all do social networking? My problem is that we always seem to have these bloody things come out and it's the same thing every time. They add on these ancillaries that have nothing to do with what their target audience is looking for from them. PLAYING GAMES. A gamer is not gonna use their console to fart around on Facebook or Twitter, that's what they have computers and smartphones for. So we have all this unneeded architecture and extra DRM crap (don't even try to tell me that the online requirement is not DRM and god help the end user in proving they are not a pirate if it futzes up and it will) taking up space and resource when they could, oh I don't know put in feature that gamers actually want: like the ability to play games made for older systems. I already said that Jim Sterling is an obnoxious prick but he has a point here. He destroyed every point you made above in the video I linked. These consoles are all pretty anti consumer. No backwards compatibility, no good reason not to have it. New and improved always online requirements just in case the folks in non broadband internet capable areas didn't already know they were second class citizens. Maybe the Wii U isn't isn't anti consumer as they really did update their motion controls there but there are no games for it yet so we don't even really know it works. Edit: I forgot about the fuck up on trying to control the used game market. Good fucking luck there. This is gonna backfire on them so hard it will be hilarious to watch. Even EA has seen the light on this and Microsoft thinks it's gonna work better for them. Online passes were not even as odious as not even being able to play the fucking thing at all. The Hindenburg disaster will be a pleasant ride compared to the xbone launch. Being progressive is not all it's cracked up to be. Especially as there is little sign that they are doing this new generation for any reason other than to suck money out of our wallets. I don't jump on bandwagons but there is a lot of smoke here so I am going to have to say there is a fire too. Double Edit: Yahtzee has weighed in as well. When two of the bigger pricks on the internet are echoing my sentiments nearly verbatim, what exactly does that say about my own prickishness? link

When two of the bigger pricks on the internet are echoing my sentiments nearly verbatim, what exactly does that say about my own prickishness? linkYou have yet to demonstrate to me how there is any complications concerning modern consoles, and again, you seem to be ignoring what I have said for two posts now. I have repeatedly told you that consoles are attempting to appeal to multiple markets. Every single major console is trying to be the ultimate device. I have the feeling you did not even read my original post concerning my opinions and the direction of which consoles are heading. I suggest rereading it. I have already explained to you why it is not the console's job to run a decade year old game. Backwards compatibility is becoming increasingly improbable due to leaps in technology. You claim literally nothing has changed pertaining to these consoles, and yet I have pointed out the stellar leap in hardware for both of these upcoming consoles. READ MY POSTS. DRM is an inevitable addition to gaming. As gigabit internet becomes more widespread at the reasonable prices (check out Google Fiber), no one even has to care. Being progressive is entirely what it is cracked up to be. Have you even bothered to look at the system specs for these machines? They are entirely new consoles. So what? Not only are you trying to use the fallacy of appealing to authority, but you are doing so purely based on opinion and malice, and off of the two biggest cynics in the gaming industry. Yahtzee hates on nearly everything he reviews or reports on, unless it happens to be produced by Valve, in which case go ahead and give him as much cake as he could eat. Don't get me wrong, I find the man incredibly amusing and laugh at some of the jabs he makes in his content, but I find him overly critical of minute details in the game. Sterling has not rejected any point I have made because it is impossible to reject any said point. I have already told you why backwards compatability is not up to the console designers anymore. Technology is becoming increasingly too complex in order to run ten to fifteen year old games. I cannot even install PC games from 2002 or prior on my PC without having to revert back to an older OS package. What makes you think that a console that is even more powerful than my PC will be able to do so? Look at what Lionhead and 343 has been doing, that is what you need to be rooting for if you want to play your old games on a nextgen console.
