Mostly applies to the men too.
But then again, Mass Effect is really not a romance simulator. So it's not gonna be hard to get the romance options in most cases.

Well it could be argued that the romances are too simple in Mass Effect, when compared to Dragon Age 1 and 2, for example, where they are a bit more complicated and the game makes you put more effort into saying 'the right things'.
As a big fan of romance in RPG's though, it never really bothered me that the ME series simplified it. The romantic writing was still much better (and much more tied into the story and the characters) than Dragon Age, in my opinion anyway.
Well I mean.... except for The Prize and the whole business with Jacob dumping you because they couldn't be bothered writing an excuse for his not joining your squad. And Miranda - just Miranda's entire romance plot. And Jack's, mostly. And Horizon obviously. And those creepy random sex scenes with Kelly Chambers and Samantha Traynor, and I've forgotten what point I was trying to make.

Any ME 2 romance option that wasn't in the ME 3 squad got the shaft. that said the writing was above par but not quite to the scale that the Bastila/Carth romances had in KotOR. No awkward sex scenes there but the build up and writing was top notch.
Bioware's writing suffered losses as the games progressed and I think it showed unfortunately.

...Well okay maybe not that...
Third, I think Bioware did romances "right" as in ou could choose. I recall in the FF games, no matter what you said the characters fell in love with each other. Squall and Rinoa, Zidane and Dagger....Tidus and Luna...bleh. Also Wakka doesnt deserve his LI, she's WAY to hot for him.

Well unless the FF series has changed a fair bit more than I thought, I am pretty certain that everything in those games is railroaded down one canon story path. In JRPGs you have little control over the story and next to none on the personality of the characters. It's not a problem really, it's just the way they are set up.

Except Chrono Trigger. That's an JRPG that actually do vary depending on your actions. Also, it have different endings too and I mean different outcomes, not just the superficial colours on the same explosions.

I never played Chrono Trigger....which is a shame because there is a frogman samurai in there.
