Hard to say but here is a condensed version of how it works in the UK according to WIKI. Burden of proof rests on the defendant in cases of Libel which makes it harder for these twitter twits. the defenses are similar to that in the US, if the statements are true, if a reasonable person could believe it was true or in cases of "Absolute Privilege" ( I think this is unique to Commonwealth countries as it applies to Parliamentary privilege to for MPs say anything in Parliament without legal reprisal) Also under UK law, anyone who spreads or repeats the defamatory remarks are considered equally guilty. There are qualifiers to this obviously but the twitter twits in this instance have an uphill battle against any legal action taken against them. Free speech was never intended to be used this way and this is a clear violation of the victims rights in this case.
