So we're talking the Canadian equivalent to New Orleans? That explains everything.

For my money Vancouver is prettier than NEw Orleans but as a cultural melting pot probably, yeah.

Hm... I always wanted to visit out west and go to Vancouver... I had a friend in my last year of High School / first year University who was from Vancouver, and he was awesome - helped me through some really hard times when my brother was causing a load of trouble for my family. Lost track of him over the years since (gawd, I'm gettin' old!) but he was a good friend then... But now, reading the last few posts between you two (Iron and Linders), if I do end up going to Vancouver it would just be to visit Linders' brother and his family... and I think I really want to do that sometime in the forseeable future, since those two little ones (Linders' brother's children) are beyond adorable! As for a permanent living place, I love my Halifax!

And it's in Mass Effect. You're in Vancouver when it's destroyed by the Reapers...

I thought those giant space cyborg octopi were a constant thing in Vancouver.

I'm going to be digging into this like hell (and when I thought I could just chill out for a few days...). But from what I'm seeing, NRA is using FOIA to set up a list of potential members and supporters (read as "mailing list" with names and addresses, pretty typical of any organization that's looking for new members). From what little is reported, it doesn't sound like a full-blown registry to me since that would require sensitive personally identifiable information like Social Security numbers. While you must submit your SSN on a Form 4473 (the documentation needed to buy something like a handgun), FOIA forbids the release of information like SSNs.
That said, I'm definitely dig into this as deep as I'm able before making a full-on judgement.
As a disclaimer: I think NRA has way too many idiots and yahoos and I am not a member of NRA or any other political organization.
ETA: the person who broke the story is a freelance journalist in Ann Arbor: a city with a very strong left-wing slant and I'd rate any reporting on 2nd Amendment issues from Ann Arbor to be about as unbiased as reporting on the LGBT community coming out of a Kentucky city with a population of about 60k. But as I said, I'll look for the facts and see what I can find.

Does the NRA really need to advertize?
I mean really, I'll just bet that I could go to an isolated indigenous tribe somewhere in the heart of South America and mention the NRA and they will probably make bang bang gestures derisively in response.
just sayin'

The same argument could be applied to religions and other large well-known organizations. Actively looking for new members is how large organizations like this survive since they need new members to replace members that leave, die, etc.

Yes and no. The NRA unlike many religions or companies already "advertise" by being the most visible private citizens lobby in quite possibly the free world. The work they do, both good and bad put them on the map every single day. religions have to fight to seem relevant in today's world and companies have to show their existence. The NRA is always in the news and their members are already politically active so this seems like overkill to me.

Please tell me I'm not the only one utterly terrified by the idea of giving gun permits to people who are literally blind. ca.news.yahoo.com/iowa-grants-gun-permits-to-the-blind-174507640.htmli know, I know, we can't discriminate based on a physical disability but somewhere over the rainbow shouldn't common sense take over at least a little bit? I realize we are not talking concealed carry permits here but it is still batshit insane in my opinion.

i know, I know, we can't discriminate based on a physical disability... In this case it's completely reasonable. You can call it discrimination if you want, but placing a deadly weapon in the hands of blind people is idiotic. I don't care who you are, if you're blind you can't use a gun properly. (I'll let the rest of you decide what is proper in this case.) Let's start giving licenses to blind people. Let them fly planes. I'm sure it will be fine.
