I'm drunk and a bit behind in the story writing department, so I admit to cutting and pasting a portion of this from a thread I created for my NaNo region's boards since you might find it useful too:
Is your PC slowly dying? (Check.) Did your AlphaSmart's rechargeable battery somehow fry itself after November 1st-- and it won't be repaired before December? (Hi there.) Does your handwriting make even third-year medical students weep? (Double check.) Then you might want to know about this free writing software that is easy to use and saves your work online:
Yarny. There's a paid version with some more fancy stuff if you want it, and there's an Offline Edition in the works. But if you use multiple computers, have access to a computer at work and want to jot some stuff down in your free time, or even if you're only able to use your local library's computer for an hour, you'll probably find this useful. As an added bonus: you can save snippets that you can easily access to flesh out scenes later, and it's not easy to accidentally delete stuff permanently. Highly recommended.
Scriptito does a lot of the same stuff that Yarny does, but it has a couple of extra features such as "e-book format preview" which lets you see how your work would look on an e-book reader. It also lets you show your work for critiquing to as few or as many people as you want. I don't like the interface quite as much as Yarny, but they're both great programs and you can keep your stuff safe online (which is handy when you're in danger of watching your novel-in-progress go "Whoosh!").
And if you like making maps for your stories, this freebie's available too:
AutoREALM which you'll probably want to view tutorial for.
Now if you'll excuse me, the captain has to go start a war. Better you don't ask. (She's already making my head hurt and I'm not even halfway done.)
