That's awesome - I saw that in the trailer, and immediately thought of your post on this thread; I could not stop laughing for a good solid minute at the mental image of a Mass Effect squad member in an armoured kilt, shrieking "Feast yer eyes!" as their battle-cry, and making Geth go flying from the horror of the flashing... Actually, in my mental image, it was a slightly unbalanced red-headed male Shepard with a crazy expression on his face...

I can make that character for a new playthrough but we don't have any Dragon Age Style snark dialogue ala Hawke.

Re-installing ME 1 right now in the hopes of curing that blasted UI glitch I had. I will be making a red headed Bearded Shepard. too bad Mark Meer did not have a Scottish accent...

Or a black guy a la Samuel L Jackson. Nah... I never was a Samuel Jackson fan. Hmmm, I'm just full of contrary opinions today aren't I?

My Shepards are black, more often than not. I don't know why that is.
There are actually very few black people in Mass Effect, come to think of it. A lot of people are very much 'mixed', which is clever - speculative, considering that it's set in the future and concerns race relations a great deal. But I can only think of Jacob and Anderson who are very dark-skinned, or have a 'black' American accent. And yet there are tons of people who are very white. Odd. Candian developers, I suppose?
--
Anyway. I'm thinking of starting Mass Effect 1 again soon, in a couple of weeks. I want to play through all three games with a 'perfect run' - no mistakes made - and a new Shep. Hopefully I'll be done just in time for the super-deluxe ending.

The mixed race thing is likely deliberate. Here on Earth we are as like as not to be a lot more homogenized in the coming century. As for Canadian developers...Well maybe it's an Edmonton thing. Never been there, but it is pretty far north in a pretty white province. But it's also a semi large city so there could be a a bit of culture there, but it is likely overwhelmingly white. Here in Halifax, the second most commonly spoken language aside from English is Arabic. So this is not a nationwide thing by any stretch.

What I meant to say was - You Canadians are all racist.
The homogenised races thing is deliberate, and I've always liked it. In the first Mass Effect novel there is a brief mention of it - that Kahlee Sanders is one of the last natural blondes in the galaxy.

you know, I've always wondered what ethnicity people choose to make their Shepards and why. The vast majority I've seen are white, and many have blonde or red hair (which as you said should be very unlikely, since those are recessive traits), as well as light-colored eyes (unlikely for the same reason).
I think it's neat when people choose Sheps from other cultures or give them different ethnicities, to mirror the whole acceptance-between-the-races plotline (or not, depending on how prevalent that culture actually is 150 years down the line). For example, my FemShep is half white and half Iranian. Don't think I've seen many others out there that are Middle Eastern at all.
Anyhow, I'm also thinking of going back and playing through all the games again to create the 'perfect' file. Hopefully they get cracking on that super-duper-deluxe ending...

I'm thinking of going with either blue or green eyes, to sort of tie-in with the 'control' and 'synthesis' things this time.

I've played mostly white shepards, But my main renegade is black with bright blue eyes and my main Femshep renegade has an asian look.

I figure that humans on colonies are more likely to have more recessive traits in their genetics. A lot of the colony programs are privately sponsored and likely set up by various fractured nations on Earth afterall. This whole one government for humanity thing is only off Earth after all. Earth itself still has individual countries.
So a colonist or Spacer could have a more specific ethnicity, whereas an Earthborn would be more as Russel Peters puts it brown.
