Well, this might sound odd coming on a Mass Effect Forum and all, but I just started playing the first game last night for the first time, using my boyfriend's computer. I needed his help quite a bit, as I am so used to The Elder Scrolls Oblivion / Skyrim, especially the Archery, and therefore kept aiming too high with the guns in ME1. I find the navigation might take some getting used to as well. All in all, since my only experience with PC gaming in general before last night was solely through Elder Scrolls, there is a lot for me to get used to. Having said that, I could easily get used to this game - it's fun and the graphics are amazing! I love the story-telling aspect, and how it's so much more linear than the randomness of Elder Scrolls. I have to wonder, though, has anyone else had any trouble trying to customize a physical appearance for Female Shepard in ME1, or does JKLinders's copy of the game just hate me? I spent time actually customizing what I thought was a rather attractive red-headed Shepard, and when I tried to save it and continue, it defaulted to the Default Female Shepard. Also, the customization menu was doing this wacky over-lapping thing that Linders says is not normal - maybe ME1 just doesn't like me... Other than that, I didn't get very far before I was too tired to continue (I got just past the part where there is a betrayal on Eden Prime - trying not to reveal any spoilers for anyone else who might not have started the game), but I liked it so much so that I will certainly be playing again... and hopefully I'll get good enough to be able to properly play without needing his help with absolutely everything... And, having read Mr. Buch's Mock Effect before ever playng the game for the first time, I had to giggle when Kaiden first came onscreen and my mind shouted "Carth!" and when Ashley first appeared in her Pink and White outfit... lol

Understandable why you're having trouble controling ME, due to the experiance from Oblivion and Skyrim. One I believe you're going through a phase where you're forced have your muscle memory relearn the control layouts, especially if you get too comfortable with the control scheme from the last game you played. I have that issue too. I've pressed the r button in ME3 a few times, kept thinking I'm still playing Skyrim, instead I've accidentaly told Garrus to walk up to banshee and say hi to her. It doesn't end well by the way.
As for aiming too high in ME. Again. it's a muscle reflex issue. As I've recalled in Skyrim, the way arrows fly towards a hostile target in verlocity speed, had a slight upwards curved to it, depending on the distance from point A to point B. Hence shooting alightly above the shooting point is optimal. Quite different from the way bullets fly in most shooters, including ME.
Now, about having issues with the UI and custom FemShep, it's probably a bug. It happens sometimes, espcially with the PC version of ME. One time I had to restart ME because my FemShep seemed to have biotic sezures in the character creation section. Maybe the game was having a bad day when you started to play it. Try creating the character again and see what happens.
Keep going though the game. I can garanteed you it's worth the time to play on it, despite my recent rant on ME3. One other thing, always run over your ememies when you're in the mako section...

*laughing* Well, I had to ask Linders what happens when Garrus talks to Banshee in ME3, as I've not played that one yet - and I can just imagine the frustration you must have felt after doing that... but I had to giggle anyways. Poor Garrus. As for the aiming too high; I'm getting better at aiming in ME1, but I can just imagine the havoc that will be wreaked when I go back to Skyrim and end up aiming too low... ;D On to the option of re-creating, I tried that, but every time I tried it did the same thing - even when JKLinders did it for me, trying to see where the issue was coming from, it did the same thing to him. He said he'd work on it later and see if it can be fixed - I have to admit, I am not very technologically inclined - I can play the games, mostly, but when it comes to Tech Support I am rather rubbish at it. But then again, the Default Jane Shepard is somewhat similar to my preferred customization - only real difference is the hairstyle and color - so it's not a problem; as long as I can still play. But apparently some of the other controls got buggy on me - since when Linders was trying to help me change my armor it would not let me equip the Phoenix armor on Eden Prime... I will most assuredly keep playing, since I do like the story and the game - and I have to admit, reading Mock Effect made me really want to play... am now reading Mock Effect 2. I know this will give me spoilers of the actual games, but I never did mind spoilers. EDIT: Corrected a rather grievous grammatical error.

I was only kidding about the Garrus talking to the Banshee part, but something like that did happened though, since I think I've accidentally did ordered him to go charging into a banshee with the AI control scheme. And yes, it's not quite the experiance I want to deal with again.
Hmm... this is a troublesome bug. My sympathies to you, hope you get around it soon.
You should see the plot twisting and turn in ME1. I have to say it's quite excerilating to say the least. Not on the KotOR 1 scale, but still quite a twist it is.

Ah, I envy you, Lily!
I'm planning to play through all three games in a row some time. It would be a lot better if I was playing them for the first time.
Well the first one is probably my favourite. Enjoy! I'm glad to see you're picking it up, though you're new to shooting games. The story is what it's all about, this series. It's very linear, but very good.
And I'll echo that advice - try and do lots of sidequests and meet lots of people. Almost all of them, and the choices you make, will come back to help or haunt you in parts 2 and 3!

Don't worry about spoilers, btw. I think everyone here except you is completely familiar with the first game now.

Well, it is official - I do have the world's most awesome boyfriend... Not to be all mushy or anything, but he just bought Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2 for me to download on my very own computer so I can play whenever I want, without having to use his computer! *does a happy dance while waiting for the downloads to download* May all the gods bless you, Oh Awesome One! (Ok, maybe a little mushy... )

Character creation in my copy is still very glitchy.
This may put a kibosh or two in my plans to do a complete runthrough of the games. But then again as custom faces from ME 1 cannot be imported to ME 3 it is nearly moot.
But in my other playthroughs I made a conscious decision to make my Shepard look older and more weathered to reflect how the weight of command and battle has whittled him down. His hair was more salt than pepper in the last game.

Glad to hear you're reading Mock Effect 2! Let me know that you think!

That does suck... but thanks again, for getting me my own copy... And, to Clint Johnston - I have not yet gotten too far in Mock Effect 2, but so far it's made me giggle - and in a couple cases laugh out loud... so, I will say, so far so good...

Ah, lucky girl! And enjoy the ride! I'm with Buch & Knight there... once I get a break in what seems to be an endless stream of work (no sign of that in the horizon, though), I want to play ME1 again, too. ME2 not necessarily yet (I played the hell out of it in 2010-2011), but I really missed the first game.
