Hello everyone, The name's Herr Wozzeck. If you're familiar with Mass Effect fanfiction trends on fanfiction.net, you're probably familiar with me as that one guy who kicked off the SI trend with Mass Vexations. Honestly, even I have a tough time believing I kicked it off the way I did, nor did I expect it to get so popular. Still, you know how it is. So... I'm usually pretty busy, but I might drop a line in here or there. Also, I might do some shameless plugging for other guys' stuff, because let's face it, guys could always use extra readers, ya know? Anyway, other stuff about me? Well... IRL, I'm a conservatory student getting his degree in music composition, and I play violin and viola on the side. Oh, and I recently started playing the theremin. That too. I'm of course into Mass Effect, but I've got quite a few other interests, including Assassin's Creed, Dragon Age, musicals, Wagner opera, Warehouse 13, and finding godawful fanfiction to share with guys. So yeah, that's me. Hi peeps!

SI Trend?
And Welcome. Since you're a fanfiction.net user, do you think I could get away with publishing my script style Mock Effect 2 (If you don't know what I'm talking about it's stickied in the fan fiction section) or would that get me banned, and unable to publish any other works?

Yes, SI trend. Before Mass Vexations, one would have a tough time finding an SI fic in the Mass Effect section of the site. After that and especially now, though? You wouldn't believe how many of them there are.
Well, script style is technically against the rules, but I've been on the site long enough to know that the admins don't do a darn thing about actually enforcing their own ToS unless it's about plagiarism or they get an email from someone that threatens to take legal action against the site. (Trust me, it's led to many an aggravating experience at times.) So I imagine you'd be all right.
Thanks!

They didn't ban me. I think, for a first offence, you'd be fine?
Anyway, welcome Herr Wozzeck. It's always nice to have someone new!
I've been out of the Mass Effect fanfic game for ages, so some of what you said there went over my head. What's SI stand for?
But please do post any fic here, and any conversation!

SI stands for "Self Insert" Clint. And yes, there's a growing trend if you look at ff.net in the late. I've certainly have... with a bottle of corona in my hand.
*Ahem* Sorry for my snarkish attitude. So... Welcome to the forums. The cookie jar is on the table. Help yourself to some and yes, I'm actually heard about Mass Vexations myself, while I was lurking on TV tropes a few months back. I still need to finish it though, been busy with getting my other fan fic- I mean comic up to speed.
And beat it to me btw.

Welcome Herr Wozzeck. I'm Cali. I currently have one major Mass Effect story (this one using mostly original characters) that's in progress, titled Cyan Steel. I haven't written anything for it in a little while, sadly. I guess I blame my addiction to Skyrim. Normally, I'm no fan of self inserts. However, if it's quality stuff I'm always up for the reading. Maybe I'll check out your stuff someday. Enjoy yourself and welcome to the forums.

And yes, there's a growing trend if you look at ff.net in the late. I've certainly have... with a bottle of corona in my hand. Yeah, so have I actually. I do occasionally manage to find a rather good SI or SI-type story, but the quality of some of them... Some of them still manage to fall into the abject Gary Stu characterizations and all that other jazz. Which is actually a little ironic, considering that I intended certain things about how my own SI character was characterized to be a deconstruction of common self-insert tropes that appear in all SI fanfiction. And then, lo and behold, it spawns characters that fall into all the traps I deconstructed. *rolls eyes* Yeah, the trend is pretty crazy. Personally, I think the best of all the ME SI's is Masses to Masses, so I highly recommend you check it out. Welcome Herr Wozzeck. I'm Cali. I currently have one major Mass Effect story (this one using mostly original characters) that's in progress, titled Cyan Steel. Hey, an all-OC story! Those are actually pretty cool when done right. I'm gonna have to check it out one of these days. As for Mass Vexations... All I'll say about MV is that your mileage may vary, especially about 3/4ths of the way through MV2 when the plot starts getting complex and kinda weird. I'm not gonna hype it up for you, so... feel free to drop feedback when you get around to it. Thanks for the welcome!

Self Insert. Ohhh.. I've had a tiny bit of fun with that, using red shirts with names from actual forum members. Problem is it gets obvious real fast, so I've not done it that often.
And thanks for the info on the script style. I'll have to start posting them!

Mass Vexations of the sprawling TV Tropes page? Looks like we've got our second bonafide Mass Effect fanfic celebrity! ;D
So, welcome to the site.
I never did get around to reading MV, Maybe I'll have to check it out now you're here.

Mass Vexations of the sprawling TV Tropes page? Looks like we've got our second bonafide Mass Effect fanfic celebrity! ;D LOL, I am surprised by how popular it is, but let's not forget the fact that the MV page on TVTropes was constructed when they still had a TroperWorks index. But yeah, I guess 953 reviews for MV2 is nothing to wink at either, so... Feel free to let me know your thoughts once you get around to it!

Welcome to the boards.
I've yet to read Mass Vexations, but I'll give it a look when I can. I do have to say I have little patience for SI fics, though. However I think it stems from the fact that my own story, Halo of Flies, somehow got lumped into the SI bracket despite having said time and again that I'm simply writing from 1st person perspective and that the main protagonist is only similar to me when it comes to height/build and some of his intrests (I'm also trying to keep Shepard and crew out of the picture as much as I can manage). I've pretty much given up on trying to explain a simple concept (1st person POV does NOT always equal SI) to the masses at FF.net.
As for all the SI's, they are a favorite target in the MST thread I started. That reminds me... I've been lazy and need to get my ass in gear.

You know, sometimes I sit back and say to myself "what the hell have I started" when I see the giant that the SI genre has become. I mean, arguably, MV kicked off the SI trend there, but some of the things I've seen that pop up... *groan* But yeah, I'm sorry to hear that. On the upside, though, your story seems interesting. I might have to check it out... Oh, and speaking of MSTs... I might have something on the MST thread soon.
