“Karen, we have to go, now!”
The young woman in black growled annoyed as she put the last finishing touches on the device.
“Just one bloody minute...” she growled.
“We don’t have a sodding minute!” her friend , also in black, shouted.
Searchlights outside the building swooped by as the silent helicopters flew overhead.
Karen’s green eyes lit up as the job was done.” Finished.”
“About time, let’s go!” Her friend grabbed her by the arm. Karen quickly brushed it off her and followed her friend down the stairs.
She remembered the day when the Reds invaded. Shortly after the Berlin Wall fell, their influence was felt all across Europe. American forces left their bases in Germany and England to fall back to the mother country, which left the UN to fend for itself. In a span of half a decade, the UN because a puppet to the USSR and all of Europe and parts of Africa became one communist continent.
It was a good life of sorts at first. No poverty, everyone had a job, the family unit was allowed to exist and the most technological advances were available for everyone. All at the cost of freedom, however. Curfews in capitols, insurrections are put down hard and religion was banned in favour of worshipping Lenin. Obey the rules and you were allowed to life in peace. Karen’s parents didn’t follow the rules and had a small chapel in their closet. She didn’t remember to who it was, all she remembered was incense and a cross. Every Sunday they prayed in secret, she liked it. It was so close, cozy...a small piece of heaven for a five year old.
Then the men in black coats came and dragged them off. Karen was send to her aunt who was a big supporter of the party, in public at least...she never saw her parents again. Aunt Nora was a good person though and raised her well. But Karen didn’t want to walk with her head down and worship an dead man in Moscow who died of syphilis. She wanted to be free, and this was the first step.
The building they just ran out of had files on possible rebels and enemies of the regime. The destruction of those files would be a first strike against the regime.
Karen jumped behind a car with her friend as both caught their breath.
“We’ve been spotted?” her friend asked. Karen took off her mask and shook her long black hair loose before she glanced over the head. The building’s guards were still dead, stuffed in a corner in the building somewhere, and the helicopters didn’t change their patrols.
“We’re still green.” She smirked mischievously.” Is it midnight yet, Andrew?”
Andrew took his mask off and quickly slipped his glasses on before he glanced at his watch.” It’s midnight, fifth of November.”
“Remember, remember the fifth of November...” she chuckled as she took out the detonator from her belt.” Think Guy Fawkes felt like this before he lit the bomb?”
“I guess, but then again he was trying to blow up parliament and the king. We’re just blowing up some bureau with paperwork.”
“Pessimist.” She shrugged and clicked the button.
The gray building lit up in the night like a Christmas tree. Floor by floor the building was levelled and destroyed. Both Karen and Andrew were thrown against the house behind them as the shockwave hit. For three blocks car alarms were sounding as lights switched on and helicopters flew towards the burning building.
“HOLY SHIT!” Antony coughed.” The hell did you put in those things?!”
“I don’t know!” she admitted as she helped him up.” Edward said it was a small charge....Come on, we have to get-“
A bright light blinded both as the sound of a helicopter flew overhead.
“Chto ty delayesh?!” a shout came over the sound of the helicopter.
“Leg it!’ Karen shouted and ran off with Andrew.
“Cton! Stop!” the shout came as the sound of barking dogs and men added to the chaos.
“Split up!” Karen suggested and ran into a different alleyway from Andrew.
Her breath was getting shorter and shorter with every step. She saw her breath trail behind her like a tree. She knew it was minus five degrees celcius, but she did not feel the cold. The sound of men shouting came closer, and closer...
she turned left, then right, then left again as she tried to remember the exact path to the safe zone. One wrong move and she could end up in a dead end, in both meaning of the words. She came across three different routes, and forgot which one to pick. Her heart was racing, her mind was running a hundred miles an hour in the wrong direction. The dogs came closer, she had to make a choice. She went straight forward as instinct kicked in....and paid the price five seconds later.
A dead end, a big red brick wall. Karen cursed and screamed and when she turned around she stared into the rifles of fifteen men.
“Hands in the air!” One of them shouted with a thick Russian accent.” Did you blow up that building, are you part of the Children of the Wall?!”
“I-I don’t know what-“ Karen tried to say.
BANG!
She jumped In the air as a bullet nearly hit her in the torso. She panicked, she made a wrong move.
“Yes, yes!” she admitted.” I’m the one who blew up your building!”
“You bitch!” the man spat at her.” My brother-in-law was stationed there!”
“My parents were taken away by you, monsters!” she went for broke.” You’ll never stop the Children of the Wall, we’ll break you down like you broke down the Wall!”
“You’ll join your parents soon enough...” the soldiers aimed at her as the one who shot at her before reloaded.
Her life flashed in front of her. The first birthday she remembered, the Sunday mornings in the chapel-closet, her father pushing her on the swing, her mother making pancakes, the men that took them away, aunty Nora, her first kiss...the bomb. She closed her eyes and wished it to be over soon. She heard the shots and expected the hot bullets to hit her any moment.....but they didn’t come.
“Shto...?” the man from before said alarmed.
Karen opened her eyes...and saw the bullets hovering in front of her.
The men looked puzzled at the bullets as they remained in place as if they were frozen. The bullets stayed there, until suddenly they flew back into their rifles and blew up the rifles they held. The soldiers cried out in anger until they heard a chuckle.
Karen glanced to where the laughter came from, that is when she saw him for the first time.
He was about one meter, eighty. He had a bushy beard, brown along with her hair. He had brown hair and a long green trench coat. His trousers were black as was his shirt.
“Sorry about that you guys, but I’m not a big fan of executing folk.” The man said with a strange accent. He was leaning on the wall with his left shoulder in a relaxed manner. “Your welcome by the way, sweetheart.” He smiled at her.
“Your one of them, aren’t you?!” the soldier from before drew his side-arm.” You’re an Child of the Wall!”
“Not really, I’m an extra-universal traveller from a world where I had to fight a dragon every once in a while for a living. Also I fought of a dictatorship similar to this, except this is more...” he flicked his fingers as he tried to come up with the word.
“Russian?” Karen added confused.
The man in the trench coat smiled and pointed at her.” That’s it, keep it up and you’ll be my most favourite person I ever met. Your up there with a bum though. I miss Chester sometimes, he had this wisdom and sark only a beggar can have after years of searching through dumpsters and su-”
“Kill him!” the man fired his side-arm as the other drew their combat knives.
“Hey!” the trench coat man dodged the bullet at an impossible speed.” Uncool!”
As he said that his hand went inside his coat and drew a sword. It was a strange looking one. It’s handle had a lion’s head but the ‘mouth’ where the blade came from was a dragon with two red orbs for eyes. The blade was half as long as the man, who seemed to know how to use it.
They all charged at him and he took them out one by one. He sliced, but at the end he did not kill any of them. Even the one who shot him. As he finished the last one, the soldier groaned in pain as he slowly dragged himself to his pistol. He picked it up and quickly fired at the trench coat.
“Watch out!” Karen shouted. The trench coat deflected the bullet which send the gun flying.
He cursed in Russian as the sword wielder came closer.” Go ahead...kill me.”
“What? And screw up my no-kill score? No I got something else for you.” The man smirked.” Ding, ding.”
“What do-“
The fist came down hard, which knocked out the soldier instantly.
Karen stared at the trench coat as he came over.” That was...that was incredible! How did you do that?!”
“Magic.” He admitted.
“I’m serious!” she replied.” What is it? American secret technology, Russian? Have the Cubans finally reconsidered and-“
“No really, magic. Told you, I’m not from around her.” He smiled.” You alright there, miss?”
She smiled.” I’m fine. My name is Karen. Me and my friend blew up one of the buildings of the regime today, saved some lives from razzia’s in the upcoming weeks.”
“Good to hear. I’m always a big fan of the underdog and resistance fighters and whatnot.”
Karen nodded and took his arm.” Come, we have to go to the base quickly. They’ll find us in minutes if we don’t move.”
“Lead the way, Karen.” The man said as he followed her.
“One thing.” Karen said as she took the gun from the fallen soldier and aimed it at them. Beofre she could fire, the trench coat grabbed her by the arm.
“Oh no no no no no....” he took the gun away.” No killing folk just yet.”
“These people killed my parents!” Karen retorted.
“And killing them will bring them back? I’m sure your parents will love you for doing that, but not me. “ he squeezed his hand around the weapon and before her eyes the gun rusted before it turned to dust.
Karen saw the dust fly away from his hand, and could not help but ask.
“Who are you?”
“Me?” he smirked again.” I’m the Time-Warrior.”
