In the spirit of our Joel vs Mike thread, I had to ask what everyone's preferance regarding the visual adaptation of Frank Herbert's masterpiece is. For me, I prefer the miniseries because it felt closer to the actcual book thank the original '84 film. (Wierding modules? Really?)
Discuss.

I'm just going to say the 1984 film because I'm biased toward David Lynch. Plus the production design was fantastic.
The miniseries was pretty damn good, too. Don't get me wrong.

I preferred the attention to the source material paid by the miniseries. I would have loved the production values and cast from the '84 movie in the mini series.

The miniserie captured the Dune universe pretty well, IMO. The Lynch movie... not so much. It' weird philosophy fit, but that wasn't enough. As meironmaiden said: "Weirding modules? Really?". So yes, the miniseries.

Apparently the existance of the wierding modules in the movie stemmed from the producers being worried that following the novel's depiction of the weirding way martial arts from would have degenerated the movie into a sci-fi kung-fu flick. I can sort of see their worries, but if that were the case, then why the hell would they make the movie in the first place? Also, in the books the Bene Gesserit were precient and excelled in observing the most minisule things, but they weren't the psychics that were portrayed in the movie.
Plus the whole ending of the movie had me scratching my head at all the WTF that was going on.

The David Lynch movie made precisely 0 sense to anyone who had not read the first 2 books. Regrettably the 1980s were rampant with book adaptations that missed the point so far that there was really no point in bothering.
Dune Miniseries was done on a cheaper budget but was superior in every sense including allowing the viewer to understand what the freak is going on without a flow chart. Plus no sonic "weirding modules" which made no sense. Lynch could have simply gone with Lawrence in Arabia in space(Spacerabia?) it would have made far more sense and been better.
